Hi all. Due to inkpad error I am dismantling my ip4850 so I can clean the pads and then divert the waste ink tube t exteral collector. But, I am up to dismantling the base of the machine but do not know how to proceed. There's no help on Google. Can someone direct me pls. Are there any Workshop Manuals around to download? Thnx. PS: By the way, my local Canon tech informed me it is cheaper to buy a new printer than for him to fix it with new pads - more landfill. Grr!!

All of them! LOL
Hardly anyone tries that with Canons. I own 13 Epson 13" and wider printers and all of them are on external ink bottles since purchase. Why? because they are almost TOO easy to convert.

I also have one each Canon PRO9000 and 9500 MKII running side by side and neither one is on an external waste ink bottle, because it's almost impossible to do.

Your ip4850 would cost way more than what it's worth to have its pads exchanged and the counters reset.
The Hat, one of our most respected contributors here in the forum had a nightmare scenario, when he dove into his Canon PRO-1 to do just what you are trying to do.

He now has a several dozen pound anchor!!!!!! There may be internal sensors that you better not disturb.

Good luck

Here is a workshop for ip4600/4700, I don't know exactly the differences, but it could be helpful:
http://www.druckerchannel.de/artike...entank_bei_canon_pixma_ip4600_ip4700_tauschen
all workshops for changing waste ink pads:
http://www.druckerchannel.de/?f=workshops#resttintenbehaelter_wechseln

PS: these workshops are not for redirecting waste ink out of the printer, what probably is easier to do on several epson's, see octoinkjet
PPS: for redirecting take a look at step 7 of the workshop: the print device lies beside the housing with the pads at the bottom.
http://www.druckerchannel.de/artikel.php?ID=2744&seite=13&t=schritt_7_druckwerk_abnehmen
Under the print device there should be the tube endings - which must be extended and redirected out of the housing...I never have done this...if you succeed, let us know...

Maybe, just maybe one of websnail's closed waste ink collectors for Epson could be attached. I don't know if this was ever tested? But as described by ghwellsjr it might not be a good idea. Also see this: http://www.octoink.co.uk/pages/Canon-Pixmas-&-Waste-Ink.html

Instead you should replace the ink absorbers. If new absorbers are not available, they can be cleaned. See this thread, and note post #3 by panos: http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=6914

After cleaning the absorbers and reassembling the printer, the waste ink counter must be resat. You will need a special service program for this. This service manual for the iP4700 might be helpful, link here: http://www.gondack.com.ar/media/useruploads/files/ip4700-ssm.pdf see page 10/24 to 14/24 incl. for service mode operations. I also think the iP4700 is mechanically similar to your printer, so info about disassembly could be useful. You find more info about the software needed in this thread: http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=7416

The use of the service tool is independent of printer models, but the steps to enter service mode vary. The difference is in the number of times the stop/resume button must be pressed when entering service mode. For most printers it is 2 times, but for the iP2700 it is 5 times, and I found the number to be 6 times for your printer: http://www.fixya.com/support/t8424130-canon_printer_ip_4840

I searched the web for a service manual for your printer, but found none, not even a paid download. This Vietnamese site claims to have one, but the download doesn't work. But there is an assembly drawing showing the position of the ink absorbers, I think that might be useful. Link here: http://www.hervietnam.com/Dien-dan/...may-canon-ip-4810-4820-4840-4850-4870-4880-a/

It is possible to use the service tool to reset the absorber counter without cleaning or changing the absorbers, but don't do that. You risk a nasty ink spill if or when the printer overflows: http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=308

Good luck with the project, and please report the procedure needed ( number of times the stop/resume button must be pressed) to enter service mode on this printer. Also please report your results with the waste ink collector if you try this.

Epson, Canon, HP... A "few"
Just to note I did get an email about this today but not had a chance to respond properly so it's on my todo for tomorrow.

Couple of quick things though.

1. It is possible to fit an external waste ink kit to a Canon iP4xxx model and much easier than a multifunction version BUT it's still as serious headache.
2. You would only want to fit a waste ink bag, not a box type kit to remove the potential for air drying of the waste ink in the tubes.
3. Fitting would require drilling one or two holes in the printer front case to allow the waste tube to exit.
4. Disassembly is required to get this lot done.

Basically, unless your printer is hitting this waste pad full point more than once in 3 years you don't want to bother and instead source some replacement pads.

However the pads are not cheap, I was quoted 35 for a set for the iP4850 when I queried costs with the UK service centre. Canon do not encourage nor wish to see people refurbishing their printers on the cheap, if at all.

Coming back to disassembly, the critical information you'll need is the initial steps to release the cover/case and it has changed a few times between each iteration from the iP4000 on up. You may find that manuals for the iP4600/iP4700 provide the best clue(s) as the case is remarkably similar.

If your printer has CD/DVD support that can be tricky to re-establish so make sure you take lots of pictures of the removal process as it happens to you can recreate it. In particular look out for risers that lift the paper feed front section as they were a pain in the assets to re-install when I did the iP4200.

Once you're in, it's a case of disconnecting and removing the power pack before removing 4 or so screws that hold the chassis in place... Once the chassis is out your free and clear to access the waste pads and tubes...

The phrase is "Good luck!"... From memory I spent a day on the iP4000 and 4 hours on the iP4200 so allow a LOT of time!... Also allow for abject failure.

I doubt you'll end up with the same mystery issue as The Hat did with the Pro-1 but it's easy to brick the printer if you don't pay attention, so take pictures all the time, maybe even video it throughout..

Cheers.

Hi guys, you are all awesome and thank you all for your helpful responses. I am up to removing the base but am stuck there, hence my enquiry. But, you have all given me much more help which is appreciated. What a shame Canon only wants to deliberately make unserviceable printers that end up in landfill. This is an 'eco-crime' (not that I am a Greenie). I have passed the point of no return so I must get into the inkpad compartment somehow. I will certainly post my progress and results. My ip4850 is less than 2 years old by the way. Otherwise, a nice printer. My old Canon i865 has done some 1 1/4 million A4 and some 10,000 CD discs. AND, you can get into the machine easily. Only the paper selector (back-top) does not work so I must feed by hand. All my printers use CISS. Will keep you all posted guys :)

Hi guys, I am up to http etc gondack.com.ar/media/useruploads/files/ip4700-ssm.pdf and stuck at removing/separating the base where the inkpads are situated. I need to find more details now on how to proceed. Wish the pdf had the remaining pics. Will keep you all posted. By the way, I have a Chinese contact who can supply Canon printheads for about half price or less. Genuine Canon and very good.

Hi guys. In case I have to buy another printer, I need one that prints DVD discs also. That currently leaves me with 2 choices - Canon ip6720 (I don't like it) or Epson T50. Does anyone have a T50 and what is the fastest time to print a DVD disc pls? And is the T50 a good choice? (I had an Epson before, years ago, and every year I had to take it in to get professionally reset at a cost of $65 :(

Well, just checked the reviews and I will not go near the T50.
So, I must find another printer that will do DVD discs also.
