I bought a whole stack of 521 ink for my new ip4600 printer based on what was on Canon (uk)'s webpage, but it seems my printer wants the 221 varient.

Is there any known way to persuade the printer to use what its given?

I think you have to replace the cart. chip with an ARChip (auto reset chip) OR a 521 chip and get a resetter

Just compare the region based cartridges like the DVD regions 1,2,3,4 and 5: neither can be used into a printer of different region.

Thanks guys. Prior to this I'd never heard of ink cartridge regionisation. Bloody nuisance. If I wasn't intending to print photos I'd start using cheaper non-Canon ink.

@spiderman: Can you point me to something that tells me about replacing the chips?

Ideally you should buy a set of empty genuine used Canon cartridges with 220/221 chips attached. Unfortunately these are very rare and I can't point you to a seller, so your next alternative is buy a set of full cartridges complete with 220/221 chips.

After you have used up these new cartrdiges ...

You will need to cut the chips off each cartridge and attach them to your own cartridges (glue or double-sided tape) and use a chip resetter every time they are moved (search for Canon Chip Resetter on Ebay - make sure its a 220/221 resetter). The chip resetter will work with genuine Canon chips, and should work with most non-Canon compatible chips - though no seller will guarantee their resetters will work with compatible chips.

Most Ebay sellers selling Canon chips actually sell ARC, Auto Reset Chips. Search for Canon ARC Chips on Ebay. ARCs are probably not suitable for you - most work by resetting themselves automatically whenever the printer is powered off, so they almost always incorrectly show the cartridges as being completely full. ARCs are really meant for use with continuous ink systems.

Just to confuse everything, here's an example of an ARC which works on a different principle ... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320336458958 ... expensive and the wrong type for you. But maybe a 220/221 version exists somewhere.

Many thanks.

The set that's currently run out is 221. From reading your post I could use those, assuming I get a chip resetter? Literaly just cut them off and stick them over the 521 ones?

No you have to replace them and not stick them over (remove the 521 and replace with 221) and get a chip resetter

I think that chip resetters will reset all PGI-x20 and CLI-x21
