Glycerol is consumed by many microbes, but propylene glycol and ethylene glycol are powerful preservatives. 15% propylene glycol and above is enough to effectively stop the growth of bacteria and fungi. Even some dyes have preservative action.

Do our typical dye inks contain 15% propylene glycol? Presumably not?

I don't know, but I think many inks contain a lot of some type of glycol, but to what extent, I don't know, that is a secret of the manufacturer.
