Newbie to Printing

Hi all!
Lately my Canon I550 leaves a mess: about 2 inch from the left paper edge it smears the letters - but only right there straight down the page. And it only happens when printing black. When I pring the same text colored - nice'n'clean as always...
Once I forgot to open the thing where the paper comes out and a page got totally stuck in there, could only be removed by wild force. I don't really know if this smearing occured right after that incident or later.
Now does that call for a new print head? Or could it be something else (I tried to take that thing apart to clean but wasn't successful)
Any suggestions?
