Canon D880 "overexposing'?

Someone gave us their old canon d880 multifunction, powers on and installed fine( XP home) but both prints and copies have a dark shadow over the whole page...
ive looked and adjust brightness and contrast, nothing seems to affect the output.
Ideas on how to resolve this?

Looks like you may need a new drum and possibly a cartridge to go with it.. :(

hmm, they are separate items? how hard is the drum to replace?
can the drum be cleaned?

Usually when the drum gets that dirty it's the contaminated toner that caused it.
The guy that had it last was probably refilling the cartridge and didnt clean it out enough.
The drum is more expensive than the toner cartridge and you might want to quit while youre still ahead, getting a new printer could be cheaper option.. :)

we got it for free but if its toast, no loss at this point.
i see re- manufactured cartridges on eBay for $21 that indicate the drum is part of the toner cartridge, i sent an email to cano service to clarify, we shall see what they say,
