Can CLI-8 refill inks be used in CLI-42 carts ?

So is the ink in OEM CLI-8 carts almost the same as the ink in corresponding OEM CLI-42 carts?

CLI-42 OEM ink is newer generation ink compared to the CLI-8 OEM, with supposedly an even better fade resistance compared to the older CLI-8 inks.

The CLI-8 refill inks you are using are most likely non-OEM 3rd party inks, none of such inks reach the longevity of genuine Canon inks - CLI 8 or CLI-42, there might be a difference between the CLI-8 and CLI-42 inks - both OEM, but the big difference is between OEM and on-OEM inks. Or do you still have some original CLI-8 cartridges left from which you want to use up the inks in CLI-42 cartridges ?
If you want genuine Chromalife100 longevity for your refill inks use the bottled Canon inks GI-53 for the G550 printer as your refill inks. There are various other threads on this forum covering this approach.

I'm aware of that. However, after testing some people say that the fade resistance between them is about the same. Even if it's not, it must be much better than 3rd party inks like Precision Colors (I tried pre-SE version, the fade resistance was horrible), etc. If the ink colors are about the same too then using cheap CLI-8 carts will be a win-win situation.

I meant genuine OEM CLI-8 carts. I find a lot of listings of them sold for $2-4.

I haven't known about the refilling with Canon GI-53 inks. However, if the ChromaLife 100 colors will be about the same as ChromaLife 100+, then I would still prefer to use CLI-8 carts instead. There will be no need to refilling and they are already quite cheap.

Suggestion for you: for the CLI-42 gray and photo gray I would suggest to use GI-53 gray ink in bottles (same fade resistance as the CLI-42 Chromalife 100+ inks). You can dilute the GI-53 ink with 2 parts of clear ink base to make the photo gray ink version (about 30-33% GI-53 gray with 70-67% clear ink base).

It's great news, thank you! And where one can find the clear ink base or is it just distilled water?
So, do I understand correctly that the C, PC, M, PM, Y, BK inks in CLI-8 carts are about the same as the inks in CLI-42?
