As so many have advised, I kept the original OEM carts, so when I sent my Canon in for warranty replacement recently due to a fatal printhead error report, I just put those originals back in. Those originals were all empty.

Canon sent me a full set of carts with the new machine. I have yet to start using them, but I need to.

I'm not sure I remember this right, but I think Canon even sent me a second set of carts.

I use refills and occasionally non-OEMs.

Bottom line: Save a set of OEM carts.

I don't know the conditions for the US, but use of non-OEM cartridges voids the European warranty. See this post.

I am pretty sure that in the US, and Canada for that matter, there is precedent that using third party cartridges cannot void the warranty. Something about the principle that the product has to be suitable for the purpose for which it is sold..

Of course these issues are never as simple as they appear at first sight. Plus the "Company" has access to the high priced legal help to further their viewpoint.

If I am wrong I am sure somebody will correct me.

Apostolos, since I am also in Greece I can assure you that if Canon Service i.e. Intersys see any non OEM cartridges, then forget your warranty. I once sent my under warranty printer to them, having first removed the cartridges because it went by courier, and the first phone call from them was ' You've been using non OEM inks so you are not covered'. 'No, I haven't' I said. After an hour I got the second phone call. 'Ah, you bought this printer outside Greece, so it is not covered. You bought it from Amazon.de so either you pay to have it repaired or you pay for us to send it back by courier...' Since then I fix it myself!
