looking for thoughts on best way to store a new unopened new canon printer. have heard that some recommend taking the Styrofoam out of the sealed box before storing.

got to think that new printers sit on shelves with the Styrofoam in for a long time so not sure if that is needed or not.

any problems storing in an unheated area that gets below freezing ?? should anything else be done ? was think to at least remove the ink tanks and print head ??

thx

I reported a problem with the scanner glass being coated with a film that I suspected was outgassing of the styrofoam in the unopened box that one of my MP760 printers had been sitting in for several years. It was really bad. I don't think it would be a problem with a printer that did not have a scanner.

The subject of winter storage was discussed here.

thx for the ideas. these are new printers w scanners to be stored in a non-heated attic.

i removed the ink carts, print head, tossed the styrofoam, re-wrapped in original plastic, re-boxed and stored them.

guess i'll know in a few years

May I ask why you would be storing printers for use in several years time?

Is it because current printers are easier to refill than future ones?

I have a MP640 that I am happy with and refilling using inctek ink and also have a resetter for. Have been contemplating getting a spare one in case it breaks down and by then anti-refill measues on the printers available would make the life of a refiller complicated. Does this sound like a smart thing to do and are other people doing this?

Geezoir - Refilling issues plus build quality and image quality are reasons that I bought a spare i960 and ip5000, both new in sealed boxes, when they were on closeout years ago. I still have the spare ip5000 unused, but I can't find new printheads for my otherwise still functioning i960's. One of the i960 printers is stored without a functioning printhead, and I am using the other one with a sometimes glitchy printhead that prints great photos and graphics. I wish I could get my hands on a new, factory sealed i960 printhead as I would keep using this printer til it totally dies!

Both of these printers use bci-6 (and bci-3ebk) carts that are unchipped and transparent - the best for refilling that Canon ever made.

You would be wise to buy a spare while you can that can be easily refilled and has a currently available chip resetter.

There is a place in the UK where you can get a new print head for your i960. www.thesuppliesshop.co.uk
Looking at the price they want for just the print head 97 its highway robbery :(
I think youd be better off searching for a used printer which has a print head compatible with the i960 say:- i965, PIXUS 950i, PIXUS 960i, i950 Series.

given canon's new opaque next gen cart, might be wise to pick up a refillable spare printer or two.....

Thank you for your reply.

I can definitely see the upside in doing this. Securing years of future printing with cheap refill ink. The cost of a couple of spare printers arent that high either. Especially taking into account that they come with original cartridges.

However, the downside is of course that one would loose out of technological progress. But how much better are the printers that will be around in five years time likely to be? Are inkjets a mature technology that aren't likely to develop much in the future (apart from the area of anti-refilling measures of course). I would appreciate some thoughts on this from someone that knows more about this than me.

Thanks for a great forum btw.

When you can sell encrypted water for $10 an ounce, it's unlikely that they will abandon it.
