artisan 810 Pigment or Dye, help?

I am about to purchase a cis system for my epson 810 and I am confused if I should get pigment or dye based inks.

1. can I use either pigment or dye?
2. I currently do not print my photos on this machine(I use an epson picturemate - the little photo printer). If this machine can work well for photos I will switch. is this a good idea?
3.should I purchase a pigment or dye based ink?

The Epson Artisan 700-835 uses Dye base ink.

However others have come up with a pigment formula.

I prefer to stay with the OEM style dye.

The Artisan produces a great photo...

am I correct that a photo printed with dye based ink will fade away and look terrible in a few months? I would hate to print photos and send to family and friends using dye based ink and have the photo not look great in years to come.

In using pigment ink for the Artisan series, you will be faced with the issue of gloss black versus matte black. Gloss Black pigment ink does not look very "black" on plain paper. The consequence of this is that normal use of the printer will exhibit text that is dark grey versus black. To get dark blacks on plain paper, you will need to use matte black ink. The issue here is that matte black cannot be used on gloss or satin photo paper. On normal printers you can switch the ink cartridges out easily. On the Artisan, even when switching cartridges out, a very substantial quantity ink remains between the cartridge and printhead. One or even two head cleans will NOT clear this ink that remains.

As a result if one uses pigment ink, the printer will be "essentially"stuck with the black chosen. Since the Artisan is an All in One, I would imaging the purchaser would want to use it for normal duty as an office device as well. That rules out gloss black.

Having discussed the issue of pigment ink on the Artisan, I must also preset the positive side as well. When coupled with good pigment inks, the Artisan 700-835 and also European model variants will produce prints that positively defies what one would have expected. Essentially it can produce top notch prints that are truly archival and offers tonality that the dye images cannot match. It is right up there with the R2880. The Artisan sports a revised RIP from the first generation Epson Claria printers that is vastly superior. The printer is no longer acutely sensitive to gray ramps. Actually I get superior greens over the R2880 with this printer..amazingly so.

Since the paper response to dye ink and pigment ink is different, the use of custom ICC profiles for the pigment ink is required. There is no way around that.

Essentially all newer Canons and Epson true photo printers now produce excellent images. There are no longer "dogs" anymore, technology has progressed. However, when it comes to true archival prints, at an affordable level, only Epson offers something for the budget conscious user. Also keep in mind that pigment inks are far more costly to use.

i have the same problem, today i received a beautiful epson px720wd (artisan 725)
i want to use pigment inks on this printer because i have an "old" r200 that i can use to print only documents.

stupidly i have bought 200 sheets of ilford glossy 250gm
and i must use only photo black right?

What is the best pigment ink for artisan? no clog please! artisan use 1,5 - 20 pl
I only know image specialists pigments compatible sold by precision colors and cone pigment inks.

I suggest you to buy cartridges and not ciss, ciss is much more complicated to clean.
