I just bought a Canon Pixma Pro 9000 Mkll this week and am wondering if the included 8 CLI-8 cartridges are the same volume as the OEM cartridges that I will purchase as they go empty, or are they just starter cartridges that have less ink by volume?

All the Canon printers I've bought have full cartridges. The Pro 9000 MkII uses CLI-8 carts which are transparent. You can see the amount of ink in them. The reservoir side (without the sponge) is normally filled to about 1/8 to 1/4 inch from the top - at or slightly lower than the top of the sponge in the other compartment. If you will be refilling the carts you should not overfill the reservoir section higher than the sponge on the other side. A bit lower is safer to prevent ink from going into the top section above the sponge, blocking the inflow of air that must occur as ink is drawn from the cart for printing.
