Some ARC chips will lose ink levels when they are powered down. Most newer ones do not anymore. Some vendors call these newer chips COC. Pretty much all the newer ARCs will not lose ink levels anymore even when the printer is turned off.
From a series standpoint, the last older types ended in the 220/221 series printers. In the 225/226 I noticed they started changing, but despite that, since proper resetters are available for this generation, these should be avoided and a resetter used.

Please write a review if you buy one of these printers. It might be a good office printer with CMYK pigment ink, and refill might not be as impossible as thought here.

Octopus-office.de sells single use and ARC chips and ink and provides refill instructions both on the website and as a Youtube video.

The refill method looks like a form of "Freedom refill" and it looks like resealing the ink port is only necessary if you want to store or transport the cartridge.

AS requested @PeterBJ
I did managed to get a Maxify 2350 for €129 this weekend to try it out, once connected to the computer, Windows installed the complete drivers but I did try the CD later, just out of curiosity and it installed a load of junk on the hard drive not to mention several serious open security risks.

Here is the very first test print that came out, it was not great so I was forced to run a head clean, which solved the poor black output very quickly, I removed a little bit of colour from the centre of the print, because the colours worked fine.

It came with the small 1500 setup cartridges which have probably 7 or 8 ml of ink in them and it took more than ten minutes of flapping around before it got to the auto head alignment.

It’s a fairly bulky and noisy printer but it does print very fast and the print quality is nice and sharp, it has two paper cassettes that can hold several hundred sheets of paper, it has a foot print of about 46 x 56 cm.

It would probably appeal to a lot of guys because it comes with all the bells and whistles, USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi and a fax also, on top it has a scanner, ADF and Duplex, with a duty cycle of 15,000 so a good all round office printer.

I will probably end up giving it to my grandson because apart from its ability to print fast, there is nothing else for me to get excited about, and I will likely get refillable cartridges for it too..

I've been testing its little brother The MB2020 since November 2015 and it has become my bulk printer. It is fast. text is sharp. The printhead is not removeable but what is interesting is that Canon has "no ink" detection built into the printhead as well as a few more error codes. I dare not test the no ink in printhead routine. I have put through I figure approx. 10,000 pages so far on it without any issues . Paper feed is like you expect from Canon..flawless.

Canon has crippled the printer intentionally to not make it print as good as it could. It is optimized for text. Images are acceptable to the masses but it is not up to a photo printer. The Epson 3640 will actually printer a less grainy image but will take much longer to do so.

It is a fine printer to replace a laser and a lot less expensive to run.

The aftermarket cartridges are easy to refill and use with some caveats. No sponges to maintain or worry about. The odd time the cart will not hold up the vacuum due to the sloshing of the ink, and it will lose it and the nozzle will dribble a bit, a head clean or more use clears it quickly as the pressure is rebalanced again. Nothing to worry about. This think will slice through documents with pictures very quickly at good resolution at standard speeds.

If you do not print photos and run a small office, this series should be on your check it out list. Definitely recommended as an office printer.

OK Mike you have convinced me, I’ll get a set of compatibles from you in the coming weeks, the setup carts wont last long at the speed this thing can churn out sheets, I tried and used the copy facility today and it finished the printed sheet almost as quick as the original copied sheet came out of the ADF..

These printers and their cartridges are also regionalised. The European model MB2350 used the PGI1500 cartridges. The American model MB2320 uses the PGI1200 cartridges, so you should make sure you get the proper cartridges.
