I looking at some carts with ARC for my MG5650. I understand that when a printer is switched off the chips reset, is that correct?

Do these also reset if the printer goes into power save mode?

There are at least two types of ARC chips. The old type resets if power is turned off or the cartridge is removed from the printer. If you are using this type of chips, never turn off the printer, else you will get false full indications when the chips reset unintentionally. A newer, "intelligent" type of ARC chips only reset if they have registered empty and the power is cut or the cartridge removed. With these chips you can turn off the printer when not in use, if the chips are not showing empty.

OK thanks that's very helpful. The question is how do I know I buying the newer version?

That's a good question. Often the chips are just advertised as ARC, with no further information. You could try asking the seller.

Octoinkjet sells these compatible refillable cartridges with Arc chips, I didn't find info about the type of chips on the cartridges. If you consider buying these cartridges, you could use the support info to ask about the chips.

I think these cartridges behave much like the "intelligent" chips I mentioned in post #2, but maybe with a difference in what causes a reset? I have never used ARC chips/cartridges, so maybe I misunderstood something?

Do these newer ARC cartridges reset if they have registered empty (showing a red X) and the printer is turned off using the printers on/off switch but the printer is still connected to the mains? If the printer is turned off but connected to the mains the power supply provides some lower standby voltages, that could prevent resetting.

Do the cartridges reset if they register empty and the printer is disconnected from the mains? I guess this equals removing the cartridge from the printer, as I think the chips contain no back-up batteries?

Searching the web I found out that you can also buy a set of ARC chips to replace the OEM chips on Canon OEM PGI-550/CLI-551 cartridges, so you can now refill OEM cartridges without having to switch ink level monitoring off. A resetter for Canon OEM PGI-550/CLI-551 chips is also available on the same page, but notice that the resetter is limited to 100 resets. After that you will have to buy a new resetter. I wonder if anybody could figure out how to reset the resetter? :D

For those who want to refill the OEM cartridges for the new Canon Maxify printers ARC chips are also available here and here.

Its register empty in any case you said when chip go to red X then you can easy replace it then put it back (reset cartridge) show full again.

But what will happen if you notice the red X but decide to refill another day and switch off the printer? When you switch on the printer a couple of days later, will the chip then have reset and falsely indicate the cartridge full? Does the behaviour depend on if the printer is connected to the mains or not?

NOO, there is no relation between main power outlet and refill cartridge, all I can observe when I got red X then I can refill it at any time at any case my printer weather connected to main or its on or its off in all situation you can put back cartridge and then show ink level to full again. :)
