i mostly print text, but every 2-3 weeks print in color. color print from this morning had some banding issues so i did a nozzle check. attached is the nozzle check(PDF). magenta and CLI8 BK are 50% not happy

i did a few cleans, then 2 deep cleans, no help on the nozzle check.

my MP830 history:
- 06/2010: MP830 installed, with old print head, now has 40,000 pages printed
- 02/2012: replaced print head
- 03/2013: waste pads changed, waste pads reset and print head cleaned

i tried windex on the ports and pads, but no help.

print head clogged ? print head electrical ? logic board ? carts ?

any thoughts from the nozzle check experts ?

I'm not sure if I qualify as a nozzle check expert, but the magenta and photo black bands divided exactly at the centre line into a normal and a lighter stripe is sadly a symptom of electronic print head failure. A new print head might help, but there is a risk that the logic board was damaged by the failed print head. A logic board damaged in this way could ruin the new print head.

The risk of the logic board being damaged is high if the print head was cleaned outside the printer using water and/or Windex. Water/Windex left where it does not belong could cause a short circuit that ruins both the print head and the logic board. The risk of a damaged logic board is much less if the print head just failed for no apparent reason and no water/Windex was involved in cleaning the print head outside the printer. Canon print head can fail in this way, especially if old. How many pages has this head printed?

As you didn't clean the print head outside the printer, I think chances are good that the logic board was not damaged and that a new print head will cure the printer. But replacing a Canon print head without also replacing the logic board is a gamble. You decide if you want to gamble.

thx for the quick response PeterBJ !

print head has over 40,000 pages on it, been out and cleaned in both water and windex......

in 03/2013, i changed my waste pads, see pics at
http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=8546

after finally reassembling, had to soak the print head to get a good nozzle check, so yes it has been out, soaked and cleaned. has worked fine for last 6 months.

hmmmm..... what to do, what to do ????

If the print head has worked for 6 months since last being soaked, then water isn't the killer. Chances are then good that a new print head will revive the printer and not suffer damage from a damaged logic board. I guess I would go for a new print head if I owned this top model AIO of the PGI-5/CLI-8 generation.

The service manual specifies a life expectancy of 19,000 pages for the print head, you got more than twice that amount, so after all the printhead has served you well.

Just looking at your nozzle print, its clears to me that the problem is just the print head alone,
so changing it for a new one will pose no problems.

They are known to just fail without warning through no fault of your own and as yours is still partially working
that is a good indication that the logic board is not affected by it yet.. :)

I agree with the above. Change the print head and see if that works...Canon USA parts department is normally the cheapest source.

- have tried windex on the ports

The stripe is possibly an air pocket above the nozzles.I have been through something similar. Usually I just let it sit for a while to let the bubble collapse ( overnight) perform a head clean and then good to go the following day. If this does not work, force liquid (water) in from the nozzle plate side careful not to have water go behind contacts and then reinstall and use immediately. The forcing of water in is to wet all the nozzles and fill the nozzle trough with liquid.

I dont like to say this but it looks to be terminal on that too. :hit
Try miklings cure on it anyway, you got nothing to lose at this stage.

You can go on using it because the missing black wont show up that much on photos,
but in the end it will have to be replaced.

At least they are still available on the open market; here is a direct link.
