Hey everyone!

Congratulations on our 4,000th member!!

This forum has been consistently growing over the years with the excellent contributions of members and their posts with great questions and information. Of course, with growth and diversity comes more probability of differences of opinion. We would like to maintain a relatively relaxed moderation style on this forum, but we also must maintain an environment where everyone can express their feelings freely.

A few reminders on proper forum etiquette: http://www.ehow.com/how_2106033_use-proper-forum-etiquette.html

1) We must respect that others have different opinions, but we must be civil and friendly even if we don't agree.

2) If you ever feel a post is directed to you personally and that someone may be "attacking" you, by no means respond publicly. Hit the report button on the bottom of that post and the forum staff will review and take action if needed.

3) Express your differences of opinion in a way that is not trolling other people into a debate.

4) Remember there are lots of challenges with communicating by text only. So much is lost (tone, body language, etc.) which can cause a HUGE miscommunication problem. Per wikipedia:

"Some researchers put the level of nonverbal communication as high as 80 percent of all communication. More reasonably it could be at around 50-65 percent. Thats exactly what Mehrabian discovered in his communication study. He found that only 7 percent of communication comes from spoken words, 38 percent is from the tone of the voice, and 55 percent comes from body language."

So, you can see that in cases where people are reading and then posting replies to a comment, especially one that has a lot of emotion, a TON of information can be lost or miscommunication. This is usually responsible for 90% of the problems on forums which cause threads to be locked or removed.

We encourage everyone to be VERY careful as they read AND reply to posts on a forum (i.e., have a thick skin when reading and be very friendly and clear when posting).

5) Be careful how you reply to someone posting their opinion and how you react to "attacks". Never flame a person for their opinion. Examples:

Bad:
"You're pretty dumb for believing that! Let me tell you that I know I'm right and you're wrong..."

Good:
"I see what you are saying. I personally believe that xxx yyy...."

Bad:
"How dare you call me dumb you jerk!"

Good:
--- Do not reply publicly but report the post to the moderators using the "report" link on the post.

Again, our goal is to continue to foster open, educational, and friendly discussion, and as the forum grows we want everyone to keep this in mind.

Keep up the great work and the fantastic conversations. This forum is full of really valuable information and great members and discussion and we want to keep it that way!

Cheers!

Epson, Canon, HP... A "few"
Message received and understood Rob...

4,000? Must be all that promotion I'm doing for you on the other forums :D ... Canon inkjet? Go see the gang at nifty-stuff.... ;)

Oh and btw...
"Some researchers put the level of nonverbal communication as high as 80 percent of all communication. More reasonably it could be at around 50-65 percent. ... it's worse when the words being used are in a language different to your own.

Rule of thumb I've found that works... If words in post X make you think "Hey, hold on a minute this guy is taking a crack at me!", wait 24 hours and a good nights sleep and then re-read... Often you'll find that you were tired, irritable and misinterpreting things... Also, if someone really was taking a crack at you they'll have been reported and the post will have disappeared into the sin bin... A win win..

*now if only I could take my own advice* :|

We just passed 5000 members. That's more than a thousand new members in less than a year.

And since there's typically ten times as many guests as there are registered users online at any one time, there's probably 50,000 people who are helped by this forum. Thanks so much to Rob for starting and maintaining this site.

Wow, that's pretty amazing and exciting for sure!

Seriously though, no thanks needed. I absolutely love this topic and the am fascinated by discussions from a TON of people that are way smarter and inventive than I am.

Also, the great members here really are a huge help with keeping spammers at bay and helping us keep things friendly and respectful!

I'm excited about what this new year will bring. :D

Obviously a need that wasn't met prior to establishing this forum. When I first looked into refilling inkjet carts there was very little information available. I was fortunate to have found Neil Slade's site and to have exchanged several emails with him prior to the developement of the forum. Although there is substantial repitition with new participants coming on board, the changes in newer generation printers (i.e. chipped carts) keeps moving the target, so to speak, and keeps the forum fresh in finding new solutions to changing problems. I can thank Neil for the initial push into Canon printers and refilling, and Rob for putting this forum together and keeping it going, giving me the ability to print without consideration of cost, thousands of dollars saved, the fun of beating the system, and the satisfaction of participating in a digital community of people bent on helping others.

I had a similar experience, learning first about Canon printers from Neil Slade's website, and then about this forum from him.

How many people are aware that you, fotofreek, were the very first user to sign on to this forum. It must have been awfully lonely here back then. How long did it take to get the ball rolling before it was worth visiting on a regular basis?

Even with only a handfull of peeps, I thought it was a fun time... probably because they were smart and out-of-box thinkers.

Very nice forum indeed. As an european participant on this forum I learned a lot from the knowledge put together by the pioneers of this marvellous forum and saved me so much money and having fun too. I hope to continue to contribute more, not only for the Canon printers (probably best known for my posts of the "German Durchstich refill method"), but soon for the Epson Pro 3800 printer too. Although this printer is not really mainstream, but it is actually very popular with prosumers (photographers and small design studio's) and the prints are just astonishing good and I think a good alternative for the expensive cartridges will be very wellcome. This printer has a very small footprint and compact and therefore very popular.

I hope Rob can help me to supply me extra upload space for the pictures I am going to make about my extended test of several refillable cartridges for this printer.

Ask and ye shall receive!

To celebrate all the new members and great discussion I've doubled the image space for all members!

(with that said, if anybody like pharmacist, ghwellsjr, Grandad35, etc. who has contributed fantastic articles and information to the community need more space, they just need to send me a message and I'll make it happen! )

Yes, Ghwells, I was an early arrival, but Rob really put the forum together, set up the software, and was the sole moderator for a very long time. For at least a year before the forum started I had participated in the comp.periphs.printers newsgroup and got lots of good info there, but it is unmoderated and had a few trolls that hijacked the site with really obnoxious, daily behavior. I stayed on that site in addition to the forum as there were a few realy good helpful people that had given me great advice. Whenever anyone asked about afltermarket inks or carts I responded with my newfound experience and then was attacked by the major PIA troll. I finally directed all these inquiries to the forum. The troll actually signed up here, laid low for a short time, and then posted some critical responses about what the forum's main purpose was. Rob "86'd" him immediately and our participants then knew that we supported anyone who behaved properly and wished to be helpful, but "disuaded" anyone who behaved otherwise. What a pleasure to be on a moderated forum!
