So, I'm in the process of installing a WIFI wall switch like this:

https://amzn.to/2JmSEFu

That will allow me to put my hall and porch lights on a timer, dusk/dawn, and just control them from anywhere anytime.

I have a 2-Gang box and I'm thinking about combining the two switches (porch and hall lights) into one switch since I always control them together.

That would require a new wall plate cover.

I could buy this one on Amazon for $8 https://amzn.to/2Jl8ikR

... or print one! :D

I used this incredibly awesome customizable wall-plate designer: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:47956

... and printed my customized thing!

You can see it took 1:40. I probably should have done more top/bottom layers and also gone slower... but as @The Hat knows, I'm terribly impatient!

The final cover was 19 grams, and with my ZylTech filament at $12 a KG, that's a plastic cost of $0.23

I'll post pics of it installed when (hopefully not if) my new switch arrives and I have it installed and tested!

I don’t do Wi-Fi, it’s my pet hate, I hot wire everything, because it’s very annoying to have to do the same thing several times just to be sure it works, and all my outside lights (7) are on Photoelectrical cell switch, with 3-watt LED lighting...
P.S. The Friggin dog is afraid in the dark...:hide

LOL!

I'm actually LOVING my wi-fi life!!! I purchased a Wi-Fi enabled thermostat and set it up to work with my Google Home Mini. It's GLORIOUS in the winter to lay in my warm bed and say, "Hey Gooogle, set the temperature to 72 degrees".

That was such a great experience, I purchased a WIFI sprinkler controller timer. It auto-adjusts to temperature and rain, so my lawn isn't watering when it's raining. It's also SUPER easy to setup.

Last night I put a lamp on one of these wifi outlets, and it was a lot of fun controlling it with my voice, putting it on a timer, etc!

Goats for lawn cutting are like Roomba's for vacuuming - you let them go and they eventually get it done.

I LOVE being able to set my thermostat from anywhere. There were days where I was coming home and knew the house would be cold, so I'd just say to my phone (while about 20 minutes away) "Set the thermostat to 71" and I'd have a nice warm house when I arrived.

I've now got my wifi switch installed.

I also reprinted the wall plate. I edited out the non-used holes (in tinkercad) and printed it with thicker walls & top/bottom, and printed it slower so the quality would be better than the first.

Here's the final outcome:

These voice controlled things; is there a possibility that someone is remotely able to listen to everything that occurs, or is said, in the house? Amazon for example.

I know there's a lot of discussion about Google Home, Alexa, etc. "always listening", but I don't really worry about it. I mean, there are tradeoffs / risks we take with everything we do. Heck, even my neighbor won't sign up for a grocery club-card because he doesn't want "the man" tracking his grocery shopping.

Honestly, if people really wanted to cause me (or anybody) problems / hack into our lives, this is the kind of stuff to worry about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lc7scxvKQOo
