Canon Mp500 - What Are These Tubes? - Cleaning Problem Printing Black Pigment

OK I've attached three nozzle check patterns, all cropped from the full page scans, but including the section where the black pigment should have printed. #1 was printed immediately after re-inserting the head and cartridges. The machine did do a fairly long automatic cleaning when I switched it...

Canon Mp500 - What Are These Tubes? - Cleaning Problem Printing Black Pigment

Thanks for the links, although I already have two of those bookmarked. This was a new print head, bought from the USA using an ebay seller. It was advertised as, and appeared to be new rather than refurbished. I could not afford to buy one here. As I described earlier, the black didn't work out...

Canon Mp500 - What Are These Tubes? - Cleaning Problem Printing Black Pigment

Well I finally reassembled the printer, and after a nozzle check pattern.....no change :( All four colours (including photo black) appear to be printing normally as before, but there's no pigment black at all. I have attached a scan of the nozzle check pattern. The pad above the capping station...

Canon Mp500 - What Are These Tubes? - Cleaning Problem Printing Black Pigment

Thanks @PeterBJ , that might be useful for the future. For now I think I will clean up and put the whole thing back together....and hope it works!

It does not appear that there are. You may be right in thinking they are air inlets, in which case I think I will leave them alone.

Canon Mp500 - What Are These Tubes? - Cleaning Problem Printing Black Pigment

Thanks @PeterBJ but the MP500 purge unit doesn't seem to be quite the same. I've attached an image of the top of the purge unit (still in situ) with the wiper retracted. The mystery tubes are attached to the rocker arms, which do not appear to be attached to anything else! They rock together...

Canon Mp500 - What Are These Tubes? - Cleaning Problem Printing Black Pigment

Does anyone have any advice on my outstanding problem - what to do with those two tubes that may lead to the wipers?

Canon Mp500 - What Are These Tubes? - Cleaning Problem Printing Black Pigment

Thanks @The Hat I will try that if I need to do it again! I did use a (fairly cool) blow heater on them last night and they are more or less dry now.

Canon Mp500 - What Are These Tubes? - Cleaning Problem Printing Black Pigment

Thanks @stratman :-) I was considering playing a blow heater gently over them; we don't have a hair dryer in the house. I did look around for new waste ink pads, but the few sources I could find seemed to be out of stock, such as here...

Canon Mp500 - What Are These Tubes? - Cleaning Problem Printing Black Pigment

Thanks for all that information stratman (BTW how do you link to a poster's name here, as Nifty did in his first post on this thread? is there an easy way or do you have to use a link/code?) Once I am sure that I don't need to do anything with those other two tubes I will reassemble the printer...

Canon Mp500 - What Are These Tubes? - Cleaning Problem Printing Black Pigment

Thanks for that :) Ok, here's a potted history. We bought the printer new in 2006/7 (I'd have to get the receipt out for the exact date). For the first couple of years it had fairly light usage, printing both black text and colour documents. For the last 3-4 years it has been used a lot more...

Canon Mp500 - What Are These Tubes? - Cleaning Problem Printing Black Pigment

Here are the images, two looking from the top and one from the bottom. The first picture from the top shows the two tubes in question protruding from underneath the capping station. #2 shows all four little 'pipes' which connect to the tubes underneath, the top two to the 'mystery' tubes, the...

Canon Mp500 - What Are These Tubes? - Cleaning Problem Printing Black Pigment

Thanks Nifty, and stratman and PeterBJ for replying. Ah, so the other two tubes might be for the wipers? That would make sense, but how exactly do they work? Can I clean them, or indeed should I? I will post some pictures shortly, and have a look at that parts catalogue. I already have a copy of...

Hello all, I have just joined today in order to find out more about servicing printers, as this seems to be a very useful resource. My current printer is a Canon MP500. We've had it for 7 years now, and it has been in almost continuous use. Previously I have owned Epson and HP printers. Apart...

Canon Mp500 - What Are These Tubes? - Cleaning Problem Printing Black Pigment

Sorry to hi-jack this thread, but I'm currently cleaning out an old Canon MP500 which I think uses the same print/machine unit (with waste ink system). I've just signed up here after reading some interesting discussions about cleaning print heads and purge units. I had a problem printing black...
