Thanks all for the advice given here. I finally found a printer with the same head for sale on ebay and took a chance that it didn't have a head fault. Helpful seller sent me just the head for 7.50. Don't know what I'll do when this one packs up, it's a great cheap printer to run.

I print photographs in greyscale and do not even have colour cartridges installed as you can see The type is show-through from the other side as I reuse paper.

I don't use colour ink and there isn't a separate photo black cartridge, just three colours and black.

Ha! it must be 48 hours. I'll be keeping it for text. Maybe there's a junker somewhere. Any second-hand printer/scanner/copier recommendations? I'm grateful.

I have a problem with black print which I'm led to believe that isn't due to clogging. Text is acceptable but photos not. I am not permitted to post images but the problem is regular banding. Half the black head prints satisfactorily, half is very light. If it is a head problem, would I be able...
