This is an interesting thread. I, like many others, have suffered with printhead failures but have recouped the cost, many times over, by refilling rather than purchasing OEM carts.
However, reading grandad's post in another thread, about not letting an ink cartridge run to empty before...
I've just bought a S/H Brother DCP-j4120DW and am using OCP Canon Cli-8 ink including black dye instead of pigment. So far I've printed about 150 double sided A4 prints with no problems. Prints are not as good as Canon prints but I'm not using it for photos.
General advice seems to be that...
This can be done on Canon printers but you lose ink monitoring but it allows you to continue to be able to refill carts without resetting the chip. Is it possible on Brother printers?
I wasn't suggesting that these resetters were the best option yet but perhaps we are getting there at last. Previous resetters required you to reset the chip when the cartridge was down to 15% full. These resetters are a step up. Whose to say that cheap resetters may not became available like...
Just an update. Could it be we are getting nearer to a fully functional Chip resetter for cli-551 carts coming on sale

You're right I do use Refill Supermarket in the UK.
These are the prices of OCP ink, I found.
CLI-8 ink Octopus £16.29 per litre - Refill Supermarket £14.58 per litre
CLI-551 ink Octopus £24.22 per litre - Refill Supermarket £28.62 per litre
Still rather a large price difference between the...
I have been using OCP CLI-8 ink for all my Canon printers (IP4500s, MG6200s & IP7250) for some time with no problems. Thought I'd price up OCP CLI-551 ink to see how it works with my IP7250. What a shock I got. Price per ltr is twice the price of CLi-8 ink and more surprisingly, C,M and Y each...
My enthusiasm for the IP7250 doesn't go as far as recommending it over the older models. I have 2 IP 4500s in use and one IP4500 packed away and one other print head in reserve. For me the IP4500s were the best everyday printers Canon produced. However, I was tempted to try the IP7250 as a bit...
The Hat got me thinking about using non OEM carts (which I've never done before) as he suggested that compatible carts were now of higher quality. I'm using refillable carts from Intelli-ink (seemingly a UK company) on EBAY (UK) and I'm quite impressed with the quality. Using the top fill...
Just an update. Bought a new IP7250 and am using refillable carts from the startup. So OEM startup carts are not needed and so far I'm quite impressed with the printer.
You make a very valid point and I have no doubt that you are correct in your post. You obviously have a greater understanding, than most of us, on the finer points of print heads. Canon print heads do seem to fail more regularly than other printers but it's all about refilling cartridges and as...
Interesting but I'm not sure it's correct because startup carts and new IP7250 printers with non oem carts are still on sale on EBAY UK. Can anyone with an IP7250 shed some light on this. Perhaps it's different by region.
I'm tempted to get a new IP7250 and it will be interesting to see if it...
Just wondering if start up cart ink levels vary per region. Got this from reputable seller on EBAY UK (I can vouch for this seller)
"Canon make 2 versions of cartridges for your printer the standard ones which are around £40 a set or XL versions which are around £60 a set
The standard...
You learn something everyday on this forum. I've never suffered with "Bad" ink to my knowledge but, like everyone else, have gone through a few print heads in my time. Maybe contamination could have been the problem in some cases
