Can this thread be frozen for a couple of days to help participants cool down ? It's like every summer there is a testosterone spike in this forum which results in angry postings.
Same experience here; I've stopped using the German method on my MP750 a month ago when my printer died after printing more than 90k pages and being put to extremely harsh summer conditions for 3 years. In fact the durchstiched cartridges outlived the printer!
Of course I am still using the...
Gimp is excellent, but if you intent to print a lot of smaller sized photographs on A4, try Qimage. I don't know if there is a free alternative, but it was worth its price when I was printing photos.
Cheating the system is not difficult since printers don't check physical or chemical properties of the ink (they just clog instead) but rather use electronics to check out ink usage and dates. However, I don't think inkjet nozzles can make bubbles out of hydrogel. Perhaps piezo inkjets (Epson)...
I don't think its possible to dismantle the screens.
What I did was to attach a large syringe without a needle at each ink hole in the plastic body and quickly draw air (Grandad had used 100 psi of compressed air). Proper flow was then restored.
The Epson WorkForce 630 is a good printer/scanner/photocopier with the option to buy high quality original ink at a relatively high price or aftermarket ink (probably of lower quality) or refillable cartridges which seem very easy to refill with high quality ink.
Hope it helps.
I'm considering to buy a cheap Epson all-in-one mainly for scanning purposes. I don't think I'll be refilling this machine (and therefore I won't be printing anything in it).
Does anyone know if recent Epson models, or at least Epsons in general, allow scanning with empty ink cartirdges ?
German method without scales, using original cartridges:
Fill quickly (about 2 ml / sec) and stop immediately at the first signs of exit port saturation (the exit port becoming "wet")
Tested 3-4 times with good results so far.
I think Craig had his waste tank counter reset 4 times before he had to clean the waste pads. If you are close to that stage, I don't think pouring windex or water is a good idea as it might flood ink out of the waste pads.
Here is a nice post to read when you decide to clean the waste pads...
I have never seen caps like the "old system" in any OEM cartridge I have ever used. My caps always looked like "new system".
Is there a possibility of "old system" caps being used in imitation, non-original cartridges ?
+1 to ThrillaMozilla's advice. Get a B/W laser printer, make sure its easily refillable or that low cost toner/drum cartridges are easily available and for your rudimentary color needs get a cheap inkjet multifunctional.
I would go for an Epson using pigments on all colors because they are superior for purposes such as photocopying (water resistant & highlighter friendly).

I am not sure I understand your point in the second paragraph, but in regards to dismantling the printhead, you've stated that at level 4 "either buy a new head or get really agressive".
If one is to buy a new printhead (which implies the user knows how to replace it) or use a method so...
Good posting, Trigger.
When you reach the 4th step there is also the option of dismantling the printhead for a more thorough cleaning of the parts.
It's easier than it looks. I recently done it for a second time with a good level of success.
No problems on Firefox 11 & Firefox 3.6 in different systems (Windows XP), both with hardware acceleration off. The artifacts you mention are probably due to hardware acceleration (might I add here the possibility of an overclocked graphics card producing artifacts under hardware accelerated...
