A while back my ip5000 quit printing.I installed a new printhead - but it didn't help.
Since then the head has been sitting in the printer (carts installed).
I'm going to dump the printer - but have held back the head, at the moment it's sitting in a shallow tub in some water.
Anyone who cares...
With the old head, I had previously run cleaning carts dry using the purge unit and am currently watching the ink levels get lower using cleaning cycles through the new head - and it would do your heart good to see how my cartriges drip ink onto paper towel - my Hobbicolors and Canon carts have...
I ordered and received a new iP5000 printhead (eBay) - the result is that I have a bran new, handy-dandy, cartridge storage unit - it aint no use for anything else..and the hassle of returning it to the US with the customs nonsense that I have to put up with from the Canadians isn't worth it --...
After six days of passive cleaning I have no output (zero) from any of the nozzles. The cleaning solution goes down, so it's either the head or the logic.
It's now a coin flip as to whether I buy a new printhead and hope that is the problem.
Used mainly for text.
The pic shows the nozzle check after an alignment.
There is a leading trail of colour in the magenta.
I switched the C and M carts, the problem stayed in the same position.
The head has been cleaned, washed, soaked (in my tears) and had compressed air to dry.
Alignment...
On an IP5000 (predecessor to your model) holding the reset button in and letting the power led go off and on, now release reset button, results in a head cleaning.
Letting it flash two times gives a nozzle check.
This duplex 'driver bug', is no bug.The fact is, is that it has been kicked around forums for a while.
Canon designed it the way it works.

All I can suggest is ...
1 Don't use duplex ;)
2 Remove the printer and drivers and reinstall.
Start> Printers and Faxes remove the printer.
Start > Printers & faxes >File Server properties > Drivers. Select the printer and 'Remove' the drivers.
If you set the printer for plain paper and greyscale then it uses the pigment black
If it is set for photo and greyscale it uses the dye (which includes the photo black).
The greyscale printouts on the plain and photo settings look different and any decent magnifying glass will show colour on...
Guess none of the gang of thirty had the information.
I looked at it long and weary assuming that the head was moving but didn't stop in the centre.
I still don't know how the damn thing knows when it gets to the centre, but happy to know it's resolved.
It can't be an ink issue.
It seems the printer thinks the head is there (else it would give a message) and I'm sure you remembered to bring the locking lever down all the way.Is there a little lever on top of the assembly for envelopes/paper?That moves the head up and down on the i850.
Something...
Assume you ran the head alignment and cleaning.
Cleaning just sucks ink through the head to the waste tank.
Remove the carts.
Remove the head, carefully press head to damp tissue, does the ink look like it's getting to the head?
This link might answer the question.
