There seem to be only a few suppliers selling the fotonic XG. And it's offered mostly for the old canon pro9000 (including LC, LM, G and R) ... or for the epson 1400, of the same age..?..
100ml bottles from smartink.nl are 16€, from marrutt 125ml bottles are 25 gbp.
Not cheap - but there are...
Addition to the fading comparison of:
- smartink ultrachrome - amazon compatible carts ("patronenland") - fotonic XG -
In post #53 you can see the color test image after two weeks, now here is my B&W test image after the same exposure. It was printed as usual using all 4 color channels, so it's...
It's up to you... one more point: a canon spare head rather becomes more expensive than less, so you could sell it without loss of money, if you did not need it and did not open it.
But also a big con: a friend had a printhead error with his pixma out of sudden. Only used OEM carts.. so he...
Just ordered a qy6-0074 for 90€.. because you can catch some very good printer models for a bargain. In this case it would be a mp980, including a ccd scanner for film, which is hard to find in later models - for 30€. These printers are often almost unused, because the owner has lost interest...
Okay, next weekend, when the three B&W samples have got the same amount of 2 weeks UV, I can reduce the competition to smartink and fotonc XG.
Then I will put both the color and the B&W sample under the bulb (more than four doesn't fit under the lamp shade) and expose for two weeks more. Expect...
Now after two weeks here is my latest comparison of fotonic XG and two new competitors:
- some cheap compatibles from amazon, looking very similar to Peter's set (link see above), and which I hoped to be as good as them
- and "canon ultra chrome dye ink", the better of two housebrands from...
Advantage p800: roll paper (if you need it at all)
Advantage 3880: refillable and resettable (if you want to join the club)
So if the used 3880 is a really good one... and the p800 purchase might be easier to cancel..
(.. I've just learned a new phrase: "hindsight is 20/20")
You can not generalize one result out of different test conditions, otherwise I could reply: 5 months are not enough...
"..Although having better performance than the very low stability L355 inks. when used with photo papers, the L800 inks are nevertheless greatly inferior to epson claria dye...
Sure it can be a problem with air/ink flow ... also cross contamination ("cyan in magenta" - which dissappeared after some prints) could be due to the carts ... or bad sealing of cart outlet to head inlet ... or the head is sitting on a clogged or bad sucking purge pad..
I would do what The Hat...
Well I should sort out my test samples, having made too many short tests of different inks and papers.. under the UV bulb I can put only four prints...
So here is a last update of the B&W series, printed with all four colors:
["UV1" = kept in dark / "UV2" = after 3 weeks under UV bulb]
Fuji...
Beside the canon "hologram sticker" on the package of newer models, there is one more sign which refurbished heads seem to miss: a serial number stamp on the upper left of the bag:
..if you did not throw this part away yet...
Nobody could tell that for sure ... but there are recommendations:

If you set the printer on -plain paper and-grey (or -b&w? don't know the english menu exactly) then it will print with 3eBK only, which results in warm neutral, but a bit grainy prints.
But certainly only B&W! The printer can not use the 3eBK ("textblack") instead of BK ("photoblack") when...
I have no A3 epson..
..but my CD tray for R285 (looks very similar to a p50) is around 15cm wide, and the tray for my r800 is much bigger, 20cm wide, almost a4 / letter size.
According to this review, the tray for epson 1400 is also big as a4. and iz looks similar to my r800, so it won't fit, I...
Some time ago I've bought two epson R285, both with many missing nozzles. I paid around 20-30€ each, so there was nothing to loose, and I tried all methods I knew.
In this thread you can read about it, but note: it is still kind of trial and error for me, there is no method which is totally safe...
My second method was basically to use cleaning cartridges, which you can make yourself by filling an extra set of carts with cleaning solution.
Now while it's only the K channel, and if you have no extra set of refillables at hand - or at least one refillable K cart of another set - you could...
My latest purchase of a 4x 500ml (LC and LM must be diluted) was in april 2015 from US seller "buysoffbroadway" at ebay, for reasonable
160€ + 30€ tax +35 shipping to germany = 225€ total (exp. dates around 2015)
I can't find such an offer actually, and the costs for shipping and tax seem to...
@Paul W.
After you have already tried the "passive" soaking, you could try to push and pull: with cleaning solution in a syringe, and a short piece of tube on the tip, which fits on the spike of the printhead. Then you can push the cleaner into the ink channel (while there is paper towel...
As far as I know most epson ITS models are based on previous models, like L800 on P50/R285.
And while using both a R285 and a 3880 I have to say the A4 model is a decent photo printer with really good output especially on glossy paper (because of dye ink..) but the 3880 is definitely superior...
Regarding the ink pooling, I have the same problem with DL ink, particular black, on Aldi-Sihl. With an old stylus photo 950/960 (7 channels with two same black carts) this ink on this paper was almost unuseable... until I tried paper choice "glossy film": less ink spray on the paper, finally a...
