Update after more than a year:
Here comes another competitor for refilling thermal printheads:
- HP GT52 ink for HP's own series of small A4 ink tank printers
It's C-M-Y only, without K, the same limitation as Canon's bottled ink
ISF had it first in a comparison of Brother ink tank printers...

Long thread, conclusion: canon bottled ink is as good as any 3rd party ink, not better, and not as good as canon cartridges. And it is C-M-Y only, no K (photo black).
Better choice: HP bottled...
I will try it next weekend ... would be really a surprise and a late christmas gift, if this printer would come back to printing.
It*s a kind of love-hate relationship, If it prints the results are among the best.
Do you have one with broken sensor too? Did you succeed in repair with bypass?
Are you sure, that the defective Sensor will show up without the printer being ready to print. only plugged in?
And the sensor I will have to activate "manually", by turning the lever down with a stiff paper, right?
But I don't know when I will do it, because the b9180 is kept deep down in my...
@Samo
thank you for your further investigation, this makes me really curious if the bypass would cure my b9180... but to "start the engine" there is more to be done: fill the carts, reset the chips, install the really bad HP drivers and software ...
BTW - I was suspecting the rear sensor of...
Hi Samo! (your forum name reminds me of famous Jean-Michel B ... should it?=
I still have both, but standing idle for more than a year, don't know if they could be re-animated at all-
The idea to bypass the sensor seems to be a good one, thank you for the link
Sadly I see no photos. Do you...
Many people use to recommend this .. but I think quite the contrary:
the valve switch is made for many thousends switchings and should be activated once a week or month. even if you prefer only one or the other sort of paper.
I can't prove it, but I think iit's the idle time especially of the...
At my first attempt doing this at home I used the same... and some more knives with teeth found in the kitchen. It took hours to do this but the result was better than I expected.
I can't recommend ii for more than one or two rolls, because it's too much effort and time.
Now I got a...
Finally I can report successs:
The Hat, I had to open the other gap and it was a risky operation, to bend it but not break it...it took some time and some more tools.
But this way I didn't need to do it as prescribed in the service manual, meaning much more disassembling to get to the rollers...
Thank you for your detailed explanations of the paper feed, it really helps me to understand what may happen under the roller bar of my 3880. Today I spent hours for trial and error with the rear and front feed, after some gently "poking" with photo paper the blocking of the fronnt feed seemed...
My trusty 3880 seem to have some foreign matter under one of the paper feed rollers. Which could be broken, but I don't know this yet (and I won't break it myself)
A week ago there was some nochy sound while printing on a new photo paper, 260g and a bit stiff, but nothing special I think. Next...
@russell
Although I agree with PeterBJ, I understand your argumentation ... but if you try than you will take the risk ... report success or failure....
What I know for sure:
- Don't use ink for epson piezo heads in canon thermal heads
- Canon text black (in the thicker cart) may be different...
I just remember that the qy6-0064 not only fits in my ip3000, but also in the a3 models IX4000 / IX5000. These printers were sold for a longer period, until 2011. And so I think that the printheads were produced a longer time, including the holögram period.
BTW my three 0064 did cost around 70...
No image of a 0061 with hologram here too ... but 0064, for the earlier ip3000...!?
There is one more indication of a genuine Canon head, at the time when production has ended or soon will end: the price! Usually around 70-80 usd/eur, the price of the last remaining or hoarded heads is at least...
Yes I know, the hologram was introduced as a label for genuine printheads, sometime after 2010.
I have still one genuine qy6-0049 (ip4000, 2004-2006) bought by myself in 2011, without sticker.
And several boxes with clogged or burnt qy6-0075, bought around 2014, all with sticker.
Three unused...
As far as I know these are out of production and sold out.
Originals should have a metallic shimmering "hologram sticker" on top of the box next to the imprint.
Search google images for "qy6-0061 hologram" ... The ebay items seem to not have it...
@russell
What sort of subjects you are printing, graphical subjects ("silouettes" --) which are like "two tone" design or b&w photography, with continous graduations of grey?
Your approach reminds me of "black only" (BO) mode with Epson 6-color dye printers. Some users at dpreview had found a...
No more fading tests since the one I posted in your dye ink thread:
https://www.printerknowledge.com/threads/brother-bottled-ink-bt5000-6000.12359/page-4
But I have the GT52 in a ip3000 (corresponding 3-channel + Text Black) and in a ip4500 (with addition of IS Photo Black) for months now...
"almost none" I want to add here. And I think It was you, resp one of your fading tests what made me try the bottled ink for printers with built in CIS by HP, the "GT52".
Seems to be more stable than Canon's own bottled ink (GI-490)!
But only C - M - Y, no (photo) black available. "Text Black"...
