New Printer in the Stable

How far would you drive to pickup a great deal on a printer? Today, I was surfing craigslist and noticed yet another "great" deal! I picked up a Canon Pro-1 for $100, but I had to drive 3 hours (1 way) to get it. The guy said he bought it from Costco and totally hated it. He had the misconception that he could print any size paper he wanted... and he wanted to print a 18x18 image for his newly created business. Well, needless to say, the Pro-1 is not that printer. He threw it back into the box and it sat there for 4 months. I was a bit worried about the print head, leaving it for that amount of time, so when I got home, I set it up and it did a rather lengthy cleaning cycle, and the nozzle check AND print head alignment were perfect.

Is there some way where I can see the total print count for this printer?

I would drive 6 hours for something like that anytime!

I usually don't search areas outside of my own, but the strange thing is that this was on craigslist for OVER A MONTH. The guy said that one other person responded to his ad and they never got back with him. Where are all the printaholics in America! OR at least in Columiba, MO...

@William Seaward, that was some catch and I can’t blame you for grabbing it with both hands, O’ by the way how is your back holding out with the weight of that brute.

The printer is on its first set of cartridges and they should be at about 50% by now because it did its original initial set up when the previous owner turned it on and it did much the same whey you turned it on, (The 45 day flush), so your good to go.

The total print count is a different matter, accessing that information maybe denied to you, but you can still try, you can start with the printer off.

1) Start the printer in the service mode.

(i.) With the printer power turned off, while pressing the Resume/Cancel button, press and hold the ON button. (DO NOT release the buttons.)

(ii.) When the Power LED lights in white, while holding the ON button, release the Resume/Cancel button. (DO NOT release the ON button.)

(iii.) While holding the ON button, press the Resume/Cancel button 5 times, and release the ON button. (Each time the Resume/Cancel button is pressed, the Alarm and Power LEDs light alternately, Alarm in orange and Power in white.)

(iv.) When the Power LED lights in white, the printer is ready for the service mode operation.

2) Start the Service Tool on the connected PC.

(i.) When a button is clicked in the Service Tool dialog box, that function is performed. During operation of the selected function, all the Service Tool buttons are dimmed and inactive.

(ii.) When the operation is completed, "A function was finished." is displayed, and another function can be selected.

(iii.) If a non-supported function is selected, "Error!" is displayed. Click OK in the error message dialog box to exit the error.

I have to admit that this was HEAVY! I have a shelf unit on wheels and I placed it on the top and it was all I can do to wrestle it onto it.

That's right, I'm at... 50%.

Your instructions worked like a charm. The P_ON is now 8. Correct if I'm wrong, I believe that would be the nozzle check and print head alignment (3 sheets) x 2... and I printed 2 images.

I can't believe that my wife is "ALL IN" with these printers. I do believe she will balk when I tell her I want a "brand new" Pro-1000 (that is a chunk of change). Good luck finding a "great deal" on one of those.

It looks like you managed to get the printer into service mode and print out the EEPROM info? If so, congratulations . It seems that only the oldest Pro printers can enter service mode by the user, newer models with a newer firmware most likely needs an online connection to a Canon server for service mode operations and a newer service tool. Don't update the firmware, if you are able to enter service mode!

P_ON is not the number of printed pages, but the number of times the printer has been turned on. The number of printed pages is more likely TPAGE= xxxxx.

It looks like the interpretation of the EEPROM codes is not found in the service manual. You will then have to search other service manuals to figure out the printer's history. If you upload a scan or photo of the EEPROM print out I can translate what I know. Only the larger print is needed, The HEX-dump in smaller print is not needed- See this post and the following post for an example of translating the EEPROM print out.

I do see the TPAGE (TTL=00012)... so the previous owner did print a couple images.
