Canon Pro 10 vs Epson ET8550

I found a new problem, fotospeed a brand that I quite like, does their profiles for Mate Paper with PK instead of MK, and the custom profile need to respect a certain size therefore I can't ask them to create a custom profile with the use of MK ink. (Yes I could use the trick with the Qimage One, but I don't like this software, but the trick works for the pro 10, I don't know the implications behind it but it works).

I saw a second-hand I1 one eye rev D that a professional photographer uses, it says it works perfectly it can let it to 150e which sounds quite reasonable. I saw an i1 pro2 for 500e but that was quite a lot of money.

I want to keep my ET8550 since on luster/glossy media is much better (I tested on OEM profile with Epson paper) vs the pro 10 with canon pro 10. it give more contrast and punch. Since the ET8550 does not have profiles out there I will be super expensive for me to make profiles for it by a professional.

Another reason to get a device I another toy to play with, no I am kidding. I just want the flexibility to test different types of papers plus who knows I might put ink of the canon pro 1000 in my pro 10, not really sure if the profiles of the 300 will work (they suppose to use the same ink???).

One eye pro will probably be better with papers that have OBAs compared to the colormunky if it works, Plus I will have a rail and it can scan smaller patches. Using ArgyIICMS is not a problem for me (I work in IT so the command line is my day-to-day).

Let see, I am waiting for an answer from the seller.

As mentioned in my posting #8 above I would not start profiling anymore with an old - very old - i1Pro, that came in two versions - with and without an UV filter to catch the OBA effects or not , there is not much UV in closed rooms so there is no effect of those and no reason to consider them during the profile calculations; ColorMunki or i1Studio both use an UV cut filter.
The i1Pro2 - as well already phased out - can measure both - with or w/o OBA impact since it uses a separate UV LED for illumination. I don't know if argyllCMS can handle that option.

So then from what you said it will be a better option to go with the colormunki/i1 studio if I don't want to put 500e in a i1 pro2?

Well, it's not that simple, you reliably can get pretty good and useful profiles with ColorMunkit/i1Studio, but the overall functionality is pretty limited -e.g. with the number of color patches. The use of argyllCMS is a bit more demanding and needs a bit more understanding of color mgmt and the function of addtional options. You could start with ArgyllCMS for a learning curve with a pretty limited investment, the original i1Pro is on the market since about 20 years, and the successor i1Pro2 for about 8 years which makes the difference in pricing, the current version is the i1Pro3 . It's your decision.
Both versions of the i1Pro - with or w/o UV cut filter should be on the market, as well as a ES-1000 version.

After buying a color Munky and doing with ICC profiles with ArgyIICMS, I am now in a new good base to start comparing the printer.

My next test was the Fotospeed Platinium Etching, however from what I have tested this applies to other Fotospeed mate papers + canon pro premium mate and Epson Archival Matte Paper.

The results of the ICC comparison are:
The ET8550 is better on the "darks" and the Pro 10 is better on oranges/yellow on the bright side.

The overall gamut of the ET8550 seems to be higher. From different prints that I have done, the 8550 looks more contrasty.

Is it possible to attach/send the icc files, I would compare with mine on the PRO-10 ?

On this test image that I choose for the diversity of pictures we see that the et8550 has more saturation however on the Tuscany picture we see that the pro 10 does a bit better in the sky probably thanks to PM and PC inks.

The darks to be honest look more or less the same. Except the guy with the musical instrument where the et8550 saturate more.

Black and whites look a bit more neutral on the pro 10.

New test result: Canon Glossy Plus II (PP201) paper

So I have to say first that the Profiles that I get from the Color Munki with 483 patches (812 patches don't change much on a different paper) are a perfect match to the Canon Profiles. Really appreciate that! It is not like profiles from the ET8550 that are complete garbage!

So in the following, there are my test results. The Pro 10 strangely enough has a bit more gamut compared to the pro 10 especially in the dark reds and light green/yellows.

The ET8550 has a bit more gamut in the mid light of the green/violet.

The highest quality gives much more gamut as you can see (not sure if we can see that by naked eyes).

The pro 10 has Higher Dmax 2.24 vs 2.08.
