If I did 3D printing I would definitely try this.

I used to run error scans on many of the CD/DVD I burned, definitely several disks of every spindle. The lower the error rate, and type of error, the more likely the disk would play on a variety of players and last longer (errors accumulate over time to due degradation of the disk). Sometimes this would lead to altering burn parameters or even firmware to squeeze out the best burn possible.

@stratman Yep - been there and done that in the past When I'm not too lazy I test any new brand of filament I buy and run quite a few tests to get it printing at optimum.

P.S. So long as my printer does a reasonable job I don’t care a feck.. Life too short to worry, besides I’ve got nothnig to test my print quality against.. Thankfully...

I was/I am scanning every DVD I'm burning, I have seen quite a lot of fall out, and data deterioration over time - 'data fading' on DVD's with increasing read error rates over the years. I'm using Kprobe with a LiteOn drive which appears to be the only drive type left which allows the read out of read error rates C1 and C2 with Kprobe and similar software like Nero DiskSpeed. Double layer DVD's have an even higher error rate.

Disk manufacturers and burner manufacturers just don't seem to give a care anymore these days, probably because people sopped burning disks as much . If the burned disk can be read then few seem to care the quality of the burn or the disk. I still have a trove of Japanese made Taiyo Yuden (and some JVC/TY), Singapore made Verbatim (maybe some Japanese made), and UAE made Falcon.

Here's a scan of a Falcon DVDR DL burned at 8x on a LiteOn iHAS524. I tried all the acceptable speeds for burning to find the "optimal" speed for future burns on that spindle of disks. Note that Nero CD-DVD Speed worked with this drive. Decent PIF's for a DL DVDR. I still have the drive and burned a Windows 10 installation disk on a rewritable disk (5-8 years old) yesterday to help a friend out in case I need to reinstall his (legal!) OS.



I knew the beginning of the end was happening when the mighty Plextor stopped manufacturing their best of class burners.

yes, that's an impressive performance for a DL DVD, I had a few long time ago with similar performance but could not get any more supply of those, I don't do much with DVD's anymore.
It's a pity that those Plextor drives are gone - they could be used to optimize the laser parameters for unknown media.

I don’t burn very many discs anymore either, two a year at the very most but, I found keeping the burn speed under 12 speed seems to work for me, I haven’t had a single failure since switching to that speed many years ago, before that I had archive discs that I couldn’t read..
