I imagine refillers are explicitly and any third party ink users are being warned and any whining and tears after purchase is on their own handkerchiefs.

and any attempts to bypass the chip logic will fail with potential further consequences - e.g. a printer lock up , rendering cartridges useless etc - the only way out would be a firmware hack

That is so easy to fix. The previous generation had the memory in NVRAM and was part of the MB. Simply using as simple a thing as a password would lock that up. Next up is private public key. Then there is the option of only allowing entry by techs if the tech is connected to the internet and the software to make adjustments and settings is on the server and the server can authenticate access AND also verify genuine firmware by testing random bytes within the memory space of the processor. If the firmware is not 100 % genuine, then entry is blocked. Hacked that? Then there can be certain data on the chips of the tanks that the firmware can insert into the memory. Even the R260 did this back 10 years ago.

It looks to me that the game is over. P800 and P600s etc has at least doubled in value. even used. Maybe it is even worth repairing that R3000 as well.

There are rumors on the German druckerchannel forum that HP is assumingly playing another trick with a new family of laserprinters in the Fareast - even printers without an internet connection cannot escape - a firmware update is played onto the printer via the chip on the toner cartridge, this to prevent the use of non-OEM products. This apparently applies to a particular range of laser printers - in a particular sales region at this time, but this method may make its way into a wider application over time - more printer models/families - other sales regions

This is the reason why I was in doubt whether or not to buy the Epson P900. In the end I bought the P800 and couldn't be happier despite the MB/PK switch, but the P800 has a security feature that force you to tap you want to change to MB on the touch screen and unlike the older Pro 3880 does not automatically change to MB if the paper type is set wrongly preventing unintentional PK to MB exchange.
