Hi All,

My first post, sorry it is rather long and complicated. I am based in Cornwall UK.

All my printers used for black and white output run pigment ink. However I need to change an Epson D92 from pigment to dye. Is it possible to wash the carts out or is it easier to buy a new set of empty ones?.

The reason for the change is so that I can use it to make large negatives for photo alt processes. The film that I use, although it will take pigment, suffers from the problem that it rubs off during the harsh enviroment that is contact printing, hence the change to dye.

My other problem is that I need to dilute a black dye ink, and search as much I have cannot find a formula for a diluent base to do this.

Do any of you experts know what constitutes the base used for dye.

I make my own dilution base for pigment ink from glycerine, wetting agent and distilled water, I have tried this with dye and it just will not work.

Hoping somebody out there can help me.

South Yorks, UK
Printer Model
Epson, Canon, HP... A "few"
On the topic of washing out pigment cartridges, my feelings are that it would be easier to get fresh cartridges and use those instead... For the amount of work, hassle and materials you'd need to complete the task I'd have thought fresh carts would be more cost effective.

As to the rest, you'd need to ask someone who is more experienced in the ink manufacture side of things.

HI! All, i'm new in this forum too

dugkeithdale
i think we are in the same boat , i'm learning Photo alt processes too , pt/pd ,Kallitype, i try to make my Digital negative with a canon I9900 printer over OHP pictorico paper and now i purchase a epson workforce 1100 (because with the dye ink from the canon i don't get a very good Dmax.) but i got the same problem it rubs off, what i'm going to try is to used other epson printer ink as the model 2200 photoblack on the workforce.
i did try to dillute the black dye ink with distiled water to make the cyan, magenta, and yellow , but how you can imagine the permanence it was not good, even though the shades of gray was very good
maybe we can share some info.
Thank you

Thanks inkjetmaster, I thought it would be best to use new carts, was just being a bit mean. As an old age pensioner I have to watch the pennies.

As I said trying to find a diluent for dye inks has so far been a negative experience.

From reading around on the net, the only conclusion I have come to is that non corrosive antifreeze might be used to replace the glycerine in my standard diluent mix. However if you get it wwrong then thats another set of carts up the spout.

Are there any ink specialists on this forum?.
