WARNING: Do not use InkTec rubber plugs with the Canon PIXMA MX870.

I have lost three InkTec rubber plugs into the internal workings of the MX870. I have replaced the plugs with electricians tape. The tape does not seal well. I will replace the tape with hot glue.

Note: I am using the Top-Fill method. The plugs stick-up 1/32 of an inch. The hole is 5/32 of an inch in diameter and is located 5/16 of an inch (center-to-center) to the right (sponge outlet on the bottom and on the left) of the ball valve.

Question: Why have the rubber plugs gone missing?

I believe there is a clearance problem with the plugs. When the print head moves back and forth it comes very close to the printers case. Also, the movement of the print head (ignoring the clearance problem) could cause the plug to work itself loose. I could glue down the plugs with hot glue to fix this problem, but I still will have the clearance problem. I will experiment with gluing down a plug on a cart to see what happens and just use hot glue to fill the holes on the rest of the carts. The only saving grace in of this is that the soft rubber plugs seem to do no harm to the printer (I hope).

PS: Something far out. The movement of the print head could be causing a pressure build-up in the ink tank and, thus, causing the plug to be ejected!!!!!

Thank you.

There can be no pressure build up in the ink tank. If there were, it would just force ink out the outlet port on the bottom of the cartridge or air out the air vent on the top of the cartridge. You need to have an air-tight seal on the refill hole on the top of the ink tank to allow a partial vacuum to develop inside the ink tank to prevent the ink from flowing out of it.

When you're looking for the clearance problem with the case, don't forget that it may be hitting something on the cover when it is closed.

Joseph, it would be useful if you could take a couple of pictures and upload them somewhere then link here so we can see the layout.

I'm a little unsure as to the location of the hole you're plugging in particular so they would help clear up a bit of confusion on that score as much as anything else.

Cheers,

I have replaced all five plugs with hot glue. I took a spare cart that had a rubber plug and placed it into the print head so you could see how far the plug stuck-up from the surface of the cart.

Thank for your reply.

Per your observation that that the carts could be hitting the bottom of the cover:

Please see the white spot on the far left cart. I placed a small amount of wite-out on the hot glue. I picked this cart because the hot glue stuck-up the most compared to the other four carts. I made some prints. Result: No wite-out on the bottom of the cover, but there is some evidence that the wite-out has been rubbing on another part of the printer.

Thank you

the case looks the same as the case for the mp560 and 640 you either have to refill using the german method or cut out some of the case on the right and left sides, i believe that this is another attempt by canon to stop refillers, when you open the top to center the cartridges, you can see the printhead rises up prior to moving and the clearance above the cartridges is very minimal
