panic: i followed the german method step by step - very carefully taking my time
now, when i put the cartrdige back in, it says 'not recognised' :(

i can't see where i could have gone wrong

the ONLY place where i can see something not being right is the resetter??
since it the same original cartridge that's being put back in - so it should really have reason to say not recognise??

i have noticed that the cartridge seemed to be leaking ink when i first pulled in out
the hole i made seemed to be leaking - the instructions says u can just leave that open
i've now put a sticker over the whole

now, leaking seems to be minimal

what should i do?

thanks

If you are using a chip resetter than you need to reset the chip again. If the resetter is low on battery then it may not reset the chip and you will need to replace the battery(s) or get a replacement if it is a malfunction. If the chip was damaged somehow in the process of refilling or resetting, then you may get that error message.

If the printer is somehow malfunctioning, you could get that message.

If you placed the cartridge in the wrong slot in the print head you will get that message.

If you exchanged chips on the cartridge then you may have the wrong chip attached or have damaged the chip during removal/transfer.

You either over-filled the cartridge or you have an air leak in the cartridge. Unless you made more than one hole or the Durchstitch refill hole grossly out of position, the problem is most likely due to over-filling. The leaking will stop once enough ink has dripped out to equalize pressure inside the cartridge with the outside of the cartridge. If the leak is caused by you squeezing the daylights out of the cartridge, then this will stop eventually after you let go. If the problem is because of high temperatures of changes in air pressure, then get to a safe place because you have bigger problems. ;)

After filling your cartridges, let them sit for a minute, or until they no longer drip, to allow for any equalization of ink and air pressure within the cartridge before putting them back into your printer.

Congrats on becoming a refiller. The money you save and the enjoyment of accomplishment is well worth the additional effort involved. (IMO)

Based on a random sample of only one, it is possible you didn't get the resetter to work correctly. With mine, I can tell that it has "hand-shaked" with the chip on the cart because there is a brief flash. Then a second or three later the light of the resetter stays on. Did this happen with you? But different resetters may work differently.

Also, you might have gotten the incorrect resetter. I don't believe there is a "generic resetter" ... it needs to be the specific resetter for a specific "family" of cartridges. I have only dealt with CLI-8 carts, but a resetter for a 221 cart would be wrong for a CLI-8, and vice versa.

The problems with a resetter can be many, as with refilling so practice will improve your performance with both.
Refilling gets easier the more times you do it and the rewards can marvellous as stated by stratman.

But the resetters are funny little things, first off is it the right one for your printer and second is
holding the resetter and cartridge together till the red light stays on for 2 to 3 seconds.

It also helps to reset your cartridge before refilling that way avoiding any ink spillage over your resetter.
Which Canon printer and resetter have you got? :|

thanks for the replies guys
i didn't put in wrong slot and didn't exchange chips
leaking problems have stopped (i was surprised at the leaking as i followed instructions religiously!)

resetter: i've done several times (in the early hours of the morning)
i got the red lights + the continued one thereafter
i don't think i've gone wrong there

battery: i assume it's built in
the resetter i've got is not possible to open (at least from first inspection)
which confused me a little: what happens when i need to replace the batteries!

printer is canon mp640
resetter: i've no idea!
i just ordered a kit from octoink - after being recommended in past replies here + after speaking to them online

from the replies i've had, i think the fault must lie with the resetter
i've contacted octoink... will just have to wait and see what they say

i'll update this thread when i have some joy
thanks

Smile has figured this out for the CLI-8 & PGBK cartridge "redsetter."

See this post.
