I am having a bit of a hard time installing printer as the procedure seems to have deleted something in my Windows print spooler. If i try to reinstall windows I can't as service pack2 for XP has rendered my original recovery disk useless. Does anyone have any useful suggestions.

There could be any number of issues at work here.
Assuming that you have full functionality except for the printer install...

FYI, there is usually a "hidden partition" that your rescue disk needs to function. It is possible that this was wiped but it's not the end of the world.

1. Are you seeing any error codes ?

2. Make sure that the Spooler Service is running.
In the Run Box type services.msc

3. It's possible that you could get a second chance at this by utilizing System Restore. If it works, contact your computer mfr and ask them how they recommend installing SP2

4. Run a check disk at your next startup :
Start > My Comp > rt-click OS drive > Properties > Tools > Error Checking > Check Now > place check @ Auto Fix and Attempt Recovery

5. sfc /scannow Run Box command that is the next level in XP repair.
It starts the File Protection Service and you will need an XP CD. Your rescue disk will not work for this.
This option looks for damaged files and uses clean files on the XP CD to repair them.
I hope that you don't have to go this far, but it's possible that sfc /scannow can provide the cure.

6. The next level would be a Repair Install. If this is done incorrectly, you will lose your profile and personal data and have to reinstall from scratch.
If you think you need this, post back and someone will help you.

7. This would be a complete reinstall.
