I decided to have a go and see if I could make up a cheaper version of ghwellsjr freedom filling method for my CLI-cartridges.

I used the clip-on type orange cover for the outlet hole, because it can be secured better onto the cartridge,
next take a needle then twist and pull out the steel section from the plastic holder, discard the steel part.

I drilled a hole in the bottom of the orange clip large enough to take the plastic holder
and I used a washer and some Araldite adhesive to hold the lot together, (24 hours to dry)
I also trimmed off the other end of the orange clip because it wasnt need it.

The washer is only there to give the plastic holder a much better grip on the orange clip it makes it more durable.
I first tried this on an old unused CLI-521 cart and just stuck some black adhesive tape on the air intake on the top to block it off.

Next I fitted the orange clip to the outlet hole and held it on tightly with some rubber bands
but you can also you a small wood clamp if you wish to get a better seal.

Then just fill your large syringe with more ink that you intend to put into your cartridge,
fit the syringe to the needle holder and draw back on the plunger a little and wait a moment.

Dont force it just pull a little at a time and wait a couple of seconds for the ink to go into the cartridge,
repeat the same action till you reckon you have enough ink in the reservoir.

Now just remove your syringe and clip from the cartridge turn it the right way up
and remove the adhesive tape from the air intake and its ready to go.

The sponge will get completely saturated with this method but the air intake hole will stay clear of any ink which is vital.

This method is just another alternative way of filling that will work and if you want to try it out
just make a refiller for yourself and practice on a spare cartridge using water instead of ink,
then if you think it will work for you give it a try or better still make up a better version yourself.
