Hello,

What is the cheapest black-ink cartridge available? Just need to "spray" ink (not used in an off the shelf printer). I hear that the earlier cartridges used direct writing methods (one resistor per pin) with the smaller number of orificies. The simpler the better as I'll need to figure out how to fire the jets (only need to fire one jet or a bank of jets).

Cheapest would be remanufactured hp 45 cartridges. Although I have no idea how the contacts are arranged. I suppose you can take a multi-meter to find the contact to use but it's still going to be tough to know what kind of signal triggers the printer. Even a fraction of a second too long of a pulse will burn out these thermal printheads.

I found a driver board (amazing what you can find on the internet) for a HP26. How does that compare with the HP45?
