There are numerous things that can cause poor quality output.

The print head

Print settings and or paper type selection incorrect.

Nozzles become clogged from not been used often enough from only printing B&W or just colour.

Print head left with one or more cartridges removed or missing for an extend time period.

Paper jam has somehow left fibres lodged on the underside of the print head !

The timing strip has dirt or foreign matter stuck to it.

The logic board has some kind of electrical fault and has malfunctioned.

The print head has burned out nozzles due to poor or inadequate ink supply.

The Cartridges

The obvious one is little or insufficient ink left in the cartridge, yes this can happen easily.

Forgot to remove the tape from the air maze on the new cartridge.

Air bubbles between the reservoir and sponge compartment.

Separation of the inner sponge and the outlet sponge.

Air maze becomes blocked with dried ink from over filling.

Cartridge outlet become blocked up with silt (Gunk) from continuous refilling.

Outlet sponge has gone dry due to inappropriate storage, no orange clip fitted.

Incorrect ink i.e. used pigment instead of dye ink, universal ink or wrong colour.

Using refilled aftermarket cartridges instead of OEM's

Poor cartridge storage, causing ink to be rendered useless, left in direct sun light.

If black, colour or both inks are not printing at all then your purge unit may also have a problem.

I have compiled this list to cover most of the things that I can think of at this time
but if anyone feels I have left out something vital out then please feel free to PM me and I will include their suggestion in this list also.
