Refill inks don't tell you how much ink is left, what about snap in ink? Do they tell you how much is left?

I think he is referring to those cartridges where you can just snap in a new separate ink tank into a cartridge "holder" which usually resets.
I've seen Epson ones but have no experience with them.

It's not too hard to peek into your printer once in awhile or after a big print job to check the levels.
Set up a weekly reminder and keep track which ones are getting low.
Ideally, you should have an extra set of cartridges and be refilling before the cartridge goes dry anyways.

If you are using a Canon you do not want to wait until the print fades (or bands) as you risk frying nozzles. Running an Epson dry can get air into the printhead - not a good idea either.
