Print head died and it's likely cheaper to replace the printer. Thing is I need regular access to my printer so being without one while a new print head makes it's way from China not a very viable option.

So...

I came across a deal on an mx712./ Any good..??
And other suggestions welcome.

Thanks..!!

If it works, then go for it.

You already have the inks and accessories necessary for refilling this printer. The newer Canon printers use the PGI-250/CLI-251 cartridges for which no resetter exists, so refilling the original cartridges is not a good idea, as you will have to disable ink monitoring and the cartridges are opaque, so visual checking of the ink level is impossible.

i called canon parts for you, (866) 481-2569. looks like they do still have print heads for the MX870

$42 + $6 shipping

your MX870 is getting close to the 5 years life when canon will stop carrying parts for it. i found out the hard way when i tried to order a print head for my older MP830. finally found a genuine one for $80, i did not bite on the cheaper ones offered from china.

nice find on the $35 used MX870, make sure to do a nozzle check to verify before you pay for it.

might want to consider getting a new print head too. that way you'll be set refilling-wise

• Method: German Durchstich Method, Lazy Method(refill single set of ink carts)
• Ink: Hobbicolors and OCP
• Misc: Squeeze bottles - so much easier than syringes

good luck with your new printer. might want to save your old carts in case you want to swap chips to make refilling easier.

might also reconsider grabbing that new print head to attempt to save your MX870, refilling future canon printers will only get more difficult.
