Could someone please tell me or point to a thread that tells you how to remove the print heads in a IP4500?

Not really: just have a look. Pull up the lever and take out the printhead.

First remove all of the cartridges from your print head.
Then lift the large grey lever (marked 1) all the way up as far as it can go.

Now grab the two blacks bits (marked 2) using one or both hands which ever is easier
then lift and tilt gently towards you until the print head is clear of the printer.

As pharmacist said it is very easy thing to do and now that you have done it for the first time you will have to agree with him..:)

Actually the procedure is the way back of the first time when bought the printer: print head installation and then installing the cartridges into the craddle. I would say: funny you did not know this....unless somebody else installed the printer for you.

Thank you The hat. As a moderator on a car detailing forum we always say there is no such thing as a stupid question if you don't know the answer!

All I did out of the box was put the cartridges in place.

That is not true: the printhead is always sealed in a vacuum foil bag and must be cut out and placed into the craddle before installing the cartridges. The printhead is never installed in your printer if this is a brand new one. You should have a printhead in a sealed bag and cartridges that are sealed as well when you bought the printer.

Maybe this can help you remember about the sealed printhead when you bought your printer:

If the printer was purchased refurbed or used it probably had the printhead already installed. If it had been purchased new several years ago it is not unusual that someone with little mechanical or tech knowledge could forget exactly how the setup went. This is a help forum, and it is best to be charitable and offer help instead of sarcasm. That is the quality that differentiates this forum from many other online groups.
