I’m wondering if it’s possible to use the Epson Eco Tank bottles to refill Durabrite cartridges? I know that there’s a variety of cartridges. My interest in this is to be able to get a cheaper Epson printer (but one that uses Durabrite ink) to save money on ink but be able to use fade resistant inks that look good on plain paper.

Durabrite inks are pigmented inks and used in a vairety of (home) office type printer models by Epson. Are you planning to switch to dye inks ? - since most Ecotank printers use dye inks, some mixed with a pigment black.
You may alternatively look for 3rd party refill inks - pigmented which perform quite well overall in respect to fading or you use the Epson 113 pigmented bottled inks of the ET-5800 (European model names/numbers).
Which printer model are you looking for ? What are you planning to print ? But be aware that photo printing on glossy papers does not look good with some ink/paper combinations - there are pigment specific effects like bronzing and gloss differentials in some cases. And Durabrite (like) inks are not targeted for photo printing. This would be the job for Ultrachrome inks.

I should have been more specific but I’m just starting to research this now (and absorb the information).

So yes 113 inks would be what I would be interested in putting in the Durabrite cartridges. I don’t have a printer for this right now. I want to get solid blacks (more solid than a dye ink on plain paper) and bright colours on plain paper inexpensively to make short run books. I’m not too concerned with bronzing nor with getting photographic looking photos.

Because they are artist’s books I want the fade resistance to be good. It doesn’t have to the longevity of Ultrachrome etc, but I want it to be as good as I can get.

Do you know if there any test results regarding of pigmented non OEM for the Epson printers that use Durabrite?

There are 2 different types of black pigment inks - one for matte surfaces like copy paper but as well matte inkjet coated papers, and another type of ink for glossy or semiglossy like surfaces. Durabrite black is to be used on matte papers only which suits your needs. This aplies as well to 3rd party refill pigment inks - they are typically offered with both types of black inks unless they are specifically labelled as 'Durabrite' compatible. Longevity of all these inks is not a problem. Be aware of an effect that the black level of such ink depends as well on the paper, not just on the ink alone, about every ink/paper combination will give a different result - some of these may not be discernible visibly , but some are. You cannot just assume that brand A pigment black is always better on various papers than another pigment black of brand B - you would need to test for the best result.

I don't know where you are located, there are probably local ink distributors in your country - search for Durabrite compatible inks.
