I just finished refilling my cartriges using the German method for the second time on my Canon MP640. Everything went smoothly except I had to take a little extra time with my Cyan cart to drill a fill hole because it had never been refilled before. By the time I found my 1/16 in drill bit the printhead had returned to its parked position. I had to shut the lid for a minute then reopen it for the printlhead to return to the fill position. My question is: Is there a way I can prevent this? If this can't be prevented, does this do any harm ?

If you really need to keep the heads centred, then turn the power off.. :)

I realize I could cut the power. I just wondered if letting the head park without a cart in it would hurt anything.

No, it won't hurt anything and may even prevent the nozzles from drying out so it is really a good idea to close the cover and let the print head park between refilling the different cartridges. Also, if you have had the cover open for several minutes, you could be in the situation that just as you go to place a cartridge back in, the printer decides to park the print head, jamming your half-installed cartridge against the top side of the printer. For these reasons, I always close the cover if I'm going to be taking any time to refill. And if I forget and I see that the print head is still in the center, I monentarily close the cover and reopen it just to reset the timer that controls when the printer automatically parks the head to avoid having it surprise me.

ghwellsjr,

Thanks for the info. I'm going to follow your advice since being that you own "9" Canon printers you probably know what you're talking about. :):):):)

The easiest solution is to have a backup set of carts that are filled and ready to use. This absolutely minimizes the time that the cover is open.

9 printers? I own 9 different types of printers:

4 MX700
1 MX850
3 MP760
9 MP780
3 iP4000
1 iP4000R
2 iP5000
3 iP6000D
3 i9100
3 i860
-----------
32 total

Opps, after taking inventory, I realize I own 10 types of printers. Not all of them work, however.

Wanna buy some printers?
