Hi everybody,

I ran into a problem with the cassette paper feed on my mx870....

I tried to print a document that was several pages, the first page printed fine but during the second page I received an onscreen error message: USB001 "paper has run out"
The message on the printer itself is: error, cassette, there is no paper, load paper and press ok.

I pulled out the cassette and sure enough there is paper, however, the next sheet that was supposed to print had just started to feed and this is where it stopped.

I reset the cassette and tried to print the document again, the first page printed just fine and then I got the same error. Pulling out the cassette revealed the next sheet stopping after an inch or so...

I had paper loaded in the back feed so I selected that source from the on printer settings section and I had no problem printing from the rear feed......I reselected the cassette and tried again, same thing happened.

Anyone else have this issue? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I don't know the Canon MX870, but I've had a similar issue with a small inexpensive HP AIO. Like your printer the HP would not load paper but flashed the "Check paper" lamp.

Most (all?) inkjet printers don't detect if paper is present in the tray/cassette. Instead they detect if a sheet of paper enters the printer. If no sheet of paper enters the printer , an "Out of paper" warning is given.

In the case of the HP the problem was caused by a pick up rubber roller that was covered in paper dust and had lost grip. For cleaning HP recommends that only warm, not hot water on a Q-tip or rag is used for cleaning. No alcohol or stronger solvents should be used. I think this also applies to the rubber rollers used in Canon printers.

After cleaning of the rubber rollers, the HP worked again.

So I suggest to check if rubber rollers are clean and if no obstructions like a torn bit of paper is found in the paper path.

Good luck with troubleshooting.
Peter.

I had the same problem, solved it the same way, cleaned the rollers. That was just a temporary solution, since I had to clean them more often after and more often each cleaning.

Thanks I will check the rollers, they look to be easily accessible from underneath once the casette is removed.

Just be very careful what youre doing and dont attempt to turn your printer over while cleaning it.. :)
