I've been lurking on this forum for over a week, trying to accumulate info to make informed printer purchase. If I was in an urban area I would simply wait for a good Canon used bargain, but I don't have that option.

So I've narrowed my choice down to ip4500 vs Pro9000 II. The latter because it can be purchased new at bargain price with rebate (this month at least.

But I'm concerned about something THE HAT said: "older Canon printers are easier to refill, thats a fact.
But the newer generation of Canon printers can be refilled very reliably, but its not as easy as it was"

I'm wondering if this distinction would apply as difference between these 2 printers. This would be significant since I'm a newbie and I'd prefer "easier to refill"

I get the impression that chip resetter is not yet available for carts that Pro9000 takes. Can someone tell me if that is right?

Reseters are available for our 9000, I've been using one for the last year, cost ~$15-21 used on the OEM carts. The older printers (s9000, i9900) did not have chips, the ONLY extra step is the resetting before you refill. Give your OEM carts TLC and they can outlast your printer!

At present I use OCP from (rjettek.cm), there are several other equally reliable vendors who active contributors to this site--dont hesitate to use any of them.

The Pro 9000 MKii is an excellent printer, I highly recommend it.

Selby if you have been lurking here then you will know you can use Irv's advice with confidence as he guided me through what I thought would be a daunting task of doing my first ever refill a few weeks ago & it went without a hitch as Irv said it would. I have the pro 9000 mk2 & my first refill kit came from Precision Colors who sell Image Specialists inks, they also have the cartridge resetter for about $20 & it's very easy to use. I also refilled my older IP 5000 which doesn't have any chips & I didn't feel it was any easier than filling my pro 9000. I was a little bit tense doing my first cartridge but the second, third & forth were very relaxing & I even got very brave & refilled using both the top fill method & by the German method so now I can choose which one I feel more comfortable with.
If you find Irv starts to talk about putting your inks in the microwave then just give me a call & I will explain all about this fetish our Irv has:)

selby32 But I'm concerned about something THE HAT said: "older Canon printers are easier to refill, thats a fact.
What in fact I was referring to was that Canon is making it so much harder to refill their newer models i.e. after the ip4700.
The pro 9000 is nearly as old as the ip4500 and therefore would not be consider a newer model at all.

If you have the choice of the ip4500 and the pro 9000 then by all means, Id say get both of them
because these two printers compliment each other.

They both use the same CLI-8 cartridges + a few extra in the 9000 and are simple to refill and maintain,
the 4500 would also give you the added bonus of pigment ink for text and duplex printing..

Thanks, Irv, Rod, Hat. My situation changed all in one day. I lost out on the ip4500 but bought an ip5000 through Craigslist for $20. I think this uses BCI-6 ink. If so then I could use CLI-8 ink in it (according to another thread), is that right? If so then I could still use the same ink in this and the Pro9000, if I bought that machine.

Yes I think you can use the same inks for both printers Selby. My ip5000 has Cli6 cartridges & the refill kits I bought for both the pro9000 & ip5000 printers have the same product number on both sets of inks (the Cli6 will need the extra pigment black for text) which means they're the same stuff. Just practice your refill technique on the ip5000 Cli6 cartridges first so when you do the pro9000 you will be up to speed on the more expensive printer.

Yeah I'm thinking I will use the ip5000 as you say, to learn refill ropes. Will hold off on buying the pro9000 (hoping the $200 rebate comes again. I'm a bit wary since I'm not handy with machines or the handyman type. I think I will try the SquEasy bottles with German method. Which means I better get order in with OctoInk.

When you do the German method Selby just make sure you get the little hole you make as low as possible then the needle just slides in under the sponge instead of going through it even though I don't think it's any problem if you do go through the sponge itself. I was surprised how easy it is to make a hole in the cartridge by using one of my wife's thicker sewing needles you just sort of move it around as you push & it seems to penetrate quite easily.
