Possible to add LJ2200 interface board to LJ2100 series to add USB?

Hi everyone:

I'm working with a charity to whom I've offered a Laserjet 2100TN. They asked for USB, in spite of the lovely ethernet interface functionality.

Since the LJ2100 series doesn't have a USB interface, I wondered if could take some interface card from a 2200 series and install it in the 2100 series printers, or is that a pipe dream?

I know, I could use a USB to parallel adapter, but we all know how they suck.

If said interface card is a component intended to be added by an end-user,
and if such a thing exists to provide USB connection, then the answer is 'yes'.
However, if you're brainstorming about opening the printer up to swap out
a logic board assembly, that answer is most likely to be 'no'.

I wouldn't expect HP to have changed things much from the days when I was
servicing their printers, when a LJ400's parts were not often interchangeable
with a LJ400P(or whatever the designations were), as well as other model groups.
The internal electronic assemblies were most certainly NOT compatible,
even though they shared the same overall mechanical assemblies,
and even the same interconnects in some cases.

I would expect the same to hold true, and even more so today, of the (in)compatibility
between very similarly-named models' pieces and parts, particularly with regard to
the electronic assemblies.

Yeah, sorry to bum on your thoughtspace.

Switches, sensors and other mechanical assemblies might very well be identical,
but when you go looking into swapping logic boards and general electronic
assemblies, you run into either a nonfunctional issue at best, or even a complete
meltdown destruction at worst. At worst, EVERY logic board must be replaced
for the printer to work, sometimes from the same revision of manufacture.
Even the fuser assembly plugged in to a logic board from a similar but not identical
model designation could cause total failure back in my days, though that was
admittedly a rare occurrence.

I'd imagine there's only been a ramped-up effort of incompatibility between such
components since my own time in the industry, so my advice would be to just leave it be
if the printer is functional, and find an external solution.
