Where is this method described? I see it is referenced in many threads. Tried search, but it just returns more threads mentioning the method. Search for Grandad35's messages returns 18 pages, too much for me to scan through.

I am a complete newbie to the ink refilling, just want to understand the main principles: how to clean cartridge, when to do it (e.g before the first refill?), etc.

Thanks!

Did you search for "flush" as the keyword and "grandad35" for the username? It returns just one page.

But I will tell you that I have yet to flush/clean my OEM carts. After the original ink was about empty, I refilled with IS ink. I didn't flush before doing so. I didn't notice any perceptible difference in printed colors. I've been refilling for about a year now and have yet to flush. I've read up on it at the beginning as you are but have yet found the need to do so.

To me, the need to flush is when you notice flow problems when the printer isn't printing from a particular ink tank.

I actually did that, but somehow omitted that thread :(

Wow, you saved me lots of my time. I am going to refill OEM cards with IS ink for the first time and I was thinking how to flush the OEM ink to avoid any possible color shift caused by mixing inks. I see now that I don't need flushing at all (and also can save some ink!)

Did you refill cartridges one-by-one or all at once?

One at a time as the printer indicated that cart was low.

I didn't really do any before/after comparisons for the ink color, but from what I read on this forum, IS ink is very close to Canon ink so I didn't sweat it.

I saw in your other threads that you have a iP4700, did you get a chip resetter for your 221/220 carts or are you going to disable the warning?

I don't have a resetter, so I think I'll just disable the warning. Do you know whether the ink level indecation can be reactivated once/if I get a resetter?

I was lucky to get red-X warnings for C/M/Y colors almost simultaneously. Just refilled C/M/Y cartridges using German method (tried a syringe and squeeze bottles and found squeeze bottles much easier to use). So far I see no color shift, but I guess printer still uses OEM ink from the bottom of the sponge.

I made some reference prints before refilling, so I'll be able to detect if color changes.

I'm not sure. You may have to poke around here to see if that's been answered already.

If/when you do get a resetter, I bought mine here:

I bought the less-expensive version for my iP4500 and it's still going strong after a year of use. I guess that since the version for your printer is so new that's why it costs more. I think it's time I should buy some replacement batteries for it so I don't get stuck one night needing to reset a cart and the having the battery die.

Right. I just made sure I wasn't in the middle of project when I made the transition so even if there was a slight color shift, it wouldn't matter.

Congrats on your first refill. It's a great feeling, isn't it?!!

Yes, this is a great feeling indeed! I ordered a resetter (was quite difficult to find a supplier that ships to Israel), probably will switch back to OEM ink meanwhile, since I don't want to void warranty by pressing the resume button for 5 sec.

Btw I did notice a slight color shift today (light gray become a bit greenish). Maybe will post a thread when I have more data.
