Looks like HP is further along than memjet in this technology, but lo and behold they won't sell it. They'll only lease it. More than likely they'll be killing you on the price of specialty paper and ink and not using their ink or refilling it will break your lease and they'll revoke your machine so they can lease it to someone who'll play ball. Boo on HP.

LOL... this doesn't surprise me at all... Memjet has obviously rattled enough cages that the big boys have had to start releasing similar systems (probably been in the wings for years) so they don't appear to be behind the ball.

You can bet the reason HP et al' haven't released this sort of tech is that it would upset the apple cart as far as their consumables go as that's the cash cow... Why kill it until you have to...

There's no way to be certain but I can't see HP going for it... My guess is that they've avoided going with it for the same reasons that Memjet hasn't been released yet.

1. Ink Feed/Clogging issues
2. Paper feed problems given the speed of the printhead

Anyone who uses commercial leased photocopiers knows how often they hit errors and require call-outs so my guess is that's why HP is reluctantly releasing this to market so they can a) steal a march on Memjet and b) avoid having people buy and then complain when it keeps breaking down un-supported.


As to who has got the technology licenses from memjet, I've heard it's a Japanese firm and likely to be Samsung but I've no definitive source and that's pure scuttlebutt so it's anyones guess at this stage.

I still think the new bottleneck will be the composition of the document from an application and the transfer from the computer to the printer. I'm guessing the market for superfast printers like this will be shared printers where the different users will still have to wait a long time for their printouts because it will be busy printing other people's printouts.

If you take a document of at least 50 pages and print it in booklet format on your existing Canon, you will see that it takes a long time before the first page starts to print. This is all computer processing before the printer even gets its first byte of information.

That's all true but with computers getting much more powerful the processing bottleneck isn't as pronounced as it was... That said I could see print servers becoming dedicated units in offices compared to the shared role that most often have at the moment.

Either way you look at it, it's going to be mighty interesting reading when real reviews start to appear instead of the usual commercial "bought and paid for" reviews that have all the independence of a neo fascist zealot.
