I was very happy to discover this forum :), and this is my first post here. Who can tell me...

Is it OK to refill empty (or mostly-empty) HP 78 tricolor cartridges, using HP color inks extracted from HP 23 tricolor cartridges?

Will the refilled 78 cartridges (filled with the 23-sourced ink) work OK in HP inkjet printers designed to accept the 78 (such as my re-geared ;) HP 3820)?

Or will the 23-sourced ink be sufficiently different, that it will cause the 78 cartridge tend to clog-up/leak/malfunction?

My rationale for this question is... I have many unused, unneeded 23's and only one, partially-used 78. [Yes, I could just sell the 23's on eBay, and then use the money to buy 78's on eBay, but after researching prices I find that a 23 sells for significantly less than a 78.]

And if you think "transplanting" the ink is OK, do you have any tips when it comes to syringing the ink out of the 23's?

Thanks for your answers!

I wouldn't! It might work but sounds like a lot of work for little return. I had an Hp 960 a few years back and I refilled for awhile. Black was simple , and color much more difficult. for me at least. It used nbr78 (color) and nbr45 ( black) so it sounds like the same deal. I bought ink in bottles and refilled from them. Being inexperienced I way overdid what I needed and the ink was around for years until I dumped it, but today I'd look for the small bottles if I was going to do that. Anyway that would be a more workable solution for you in my opinion, and always use the best inks you can find. These days I'm into Epson printers because they are really easy to set up with CIS or refillable systems and I like the kits with what they call dampers and resettable chips. Saves a ton of money too! My old hp 960 was very durable, built like a tank as I recall. I gave it to a friend when I went with the Epsons. By the way You did say empty cartridges? Thing is, I think once they dry out they are done for, but I might be wrong on this. I remember reading that it's best to refill way before the HP tricolor and black carts get low much less, dry out! Hope I helped you with all this! Happy Printing.
