I would like to start and say what a great resource this forum is, I have learned a ton in the last week or so perusing old threads. The knowledge and willingness to share by the members is impressive.

I currently am using some low end HP All In One that came free with something we bought, previously I was using a Canon 6220D and a ip950. I am not happy with the HP, and am looking to change printers. I do have a household request that the next printer be wireless, which is the requirement that seems to kill some of the older printer recommendations I have seen. Printing is mixed, from photos up to 8X10s, kids homework, and digital art my girls like to do on the computer. Say an average of 20 pages per week, but it could range from 5 to 50. The cost of ink has always killed me, and looking for alternative solutions is what brought me here. Sadly, I am not technically inclined, so the easier the better.

From what I have read, Epson and Canon are still the preferred brands, with strengths and weaknesses. My concerns with Canon is that with current printers that have wireless, I am not sure about resetting the chips, which would require disabling the low ink monitor. With my kids, I am confident they would print without ink and possibly burn out the print head.

With Epsons, it seems that a CIS is the preferred method, but my volume might be too low for one. Refillable cartridges seems to be less common than with Canon.

Now that I have managed to confuse myself! Any suggestions for an AIO, with wireless, with after market ink solutions that seems like would work for me would be deeply appreciated! This weekend, I found myself at Best Buy looking at the Kodaks and thinking it might be my best option!

Both Canon and Epson offer printers that meet your requirements. I, myself, am a Canon fan and currently own an MP640 and am extremely happy with it's speed, quality of print, and versatility.
You mention in your post that "resetting the chips, which would require disabling the low ink monitor.". Resetting the chips DOES NOT require disabling the ink monitor. That's why you reset the chip. So you don't have to disable the ink monitor. Purchase a chip resetter from ebay and some quality ink from Precision Ink or Hobbicolors ink and you're set. The aforementioned ink and chip resetter will run you about what a new set of OEM cartridges would cost. Except that you'll get 5 or 6 refills (or more) from this bulk ink, making printing costs negligible. One word of advice is to only use OEM cartidges for your refills using the German fill method. I used to refill using the top fill method with my older Canon printers and can tell you that the German Method is much faster and cleaner.

What I don't like about Epson printers is you can't easily refill OEM cartridges. The amount of ink refilled is alwasy too little and you have to refill soon. 3rd part refillables are all made in China with doubt in quality. 3rd party inks are way over priced too. That's why I stick with Canon printers for years.

Thanks for all of the feedback. Canon seems to be the way to go, although I am off to do more research. She Who Must Be Obeyed reminded me how unhappy she would be if the photo's she prints for scrap booking do not hold up well, so got a few more things to evaluate :)

From a Canon AOI that is readily available, I was leaning towards the MX870 that uses the 221 cartridges versus the newer 226 series that are all black.

Maybe a color laser for AOI and kid purposes would make more sense, then a pigment printer for her archival purposes?

If you are in the U.S., here's a good deal on a Canon MP640. I don't know how long the sale is good for, it's direct from Canon.
$79.99 plus free shipping and 50 sheets of 4X8 photo paper free.

Dec. 17, 2010 Update: Printer is still $79.99 with free photo paper, but shipping is no longer free.
Dec. 30, 2010 Update: Free shipping is back.
