Printer Model
Epson SC P900
Hi, John Wheeler here.
What printers do you currently have (manufacturers / models):

Epson SC P900

What printers have you owned in the past:

My first Photo printer was the 1999 HP Photosmart P1100. I was thrilled to be able to print at home, as I never wanted to mess with a wet photo print lab setup. I worked at HP, so I had nice discounts for their printers and ink, so I stuck with the HP Photosmart line of printers. The printers were primarily for office work and occasional photo prints with only the individual CMYK separate ink cartridges and print sizes up to a max of 8.5 x 11 inches. I did not print many pictures and focused on sharing them electronically.

So, having the Epson SC P900 is a nice treat, as well as getting to know it, appropriate settings, and trying out different papers.

If you had one wish, which printer would you want:

It's a printer that does not exist yet. I would want one with high reliability, easy to set up, high-quality prints with rational cost inks. In other words, I want to focus on creating and sharing images electronically or on paper without the technology getting in the way. Don't get more wrong. I enjoy technology and the details, yet I love seeing the smiling faces of those with whom I have shared images.

What experiences do you have with refilling and tinkering with printers:

I want to avoid tinkering with printers (unless I have to) and will pay the OEM ink ransom to prevent problems. I did have to tinker with the paper roller attachment on the P900. It installed quickly, and the software worked great, yet the roll paper would not feed. I tried all sorts of things with firmware updates, triple-checking all settings, etc, and then decided to pull off the paper roller attachment and start debugging. One of the small wheel rollers was not set in place and was jamming the paper as it tried to go through. I was not a happy camper and was past any return time for the P900 (Black mark for Epson). I was pondering having it sent in for replacement or repair, and my 14-year-old granddaughter suggested that the wheel could pop back in. Could it be that simple? I was skeptical. I looked at the other free-running roller wheels, and they all appeared to have no securing mechanism for them and likely just popped into the plastic clamp (which made me wonder about the sturdiness of the Epson P900). Sure enough, with the right-angled tool to reach in and put the pressure on the right spot of that little wheel, it popped right in, and the roll paper worked without any more issues. Yet, it also made me decide to caution others when purchasing the P900. My use is lightweight, so I hope it will last without too many issues.

Any other info you'd like to share about your education, work, or hobbies:

I was an engineer/engineering manager at HP and retired in 2002. My hobbies are photo restoration, genealogy, and helping out on Photoshop forums. I am familiar with all the needed color management, yet entirely new to all the ins and outs of printing. To familiarize myself, I bought several packets of printer paper sample packs from Epson and Hahmenühle and printed test sheets for evaluation. It's only color and nothing in B&W at this point.

I moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, with my wife to be close to our grandkids :)

So I hope you can put up with a left-brained guy trying to do right-brained creative work :) Oh, and I am very wordy if you did not notice :)
