After 10 years refilling my HP 940c I'm afraid it's gonna be hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

The new Canon PIXMA iP4920 Inkjet Photo Printer says it uses these ink cart.

CLI-226 4 Color Pack and CLI-226BK Black Ink Tank or PGI-225/CLI-226 4 Color Pack and PGI-225 Black Ink Tank.

I believe I read the ones that came with it are just a trial size ink supply so I need to buy the first new full set. But I have no idea which one of these to purchase or what the differences are.
I thought I would start out with OEM new to get a feel of what it's suppose to be like. Then start our usual refilling. But after reading this site I'm wondering if I should skip that step. And what products I need to get.

I'm afraid I'm about to run out of ink and I'm a big text printer.
My husband would love the idea of clear cart I'm sure, as he's been wrestling with opaque for 10 years.

Many thanks....j

The Canon pixma iP4920 does use the 226/ 225 cartridges and are full of ink just like the ones your purchase individually,
Canon dont sell printers with half full cartridges.

The iP4920 printer uses opaque cartridges which are not as easy to fill as the 521 / 221 (see through ones) are
but can be converted easily for use by swapping the chips from the current 226/225 cartridges.

The refilling of these opaque cartridges is discussed in detail on the this forum
if you do not wish to use 521/221 cartridges.

I'm sorry but I'm totally lost. Does that mean that the 521/221 fit the ip4920?
And if so where do I get them? Just Google?
And do I have to worry about looking for CLI or PGI (not having any idea what the difference is)?
And what about this 'resetter' I read of, do I need one of those?
And could I just refill the tanks that came with it? Since you said they are regular size tanks. Thanks, I don't know where I read otherwise.
Yes, I found the instructions on swapping the chips. Very clear.

And if so where do I get them? Just Google? Ink suppliers who are participators (members) on this forum can supply OEM empty cartridges..

And do I have to worry about looking for CLI or PGI No they can supply both mostly.

(not having any idea what the difference is)? The PGI is a larger cartridge which uses pigment ink and the smaller CLI cartridges only use dye ink.

And what about this 'resetter' I read of, do I need one of those? Yes a resetter is essential if you want to know how much ink is left in the cartridge.

And could I just refill the tanks that came with it? By all means that is also possible but youll still need a resetter after you have refilled.

The model number of the cartridge depends upon what location in the world your printer was designed to operate in. The 221 cartridge is for North America. If your current cartridges are 225/226 then you want to purchase either 225/226 or 220/221. The dimensions of the corresponding cartridge types - 220 & 520 and the 221 & 521 - are the same, but the chips used for the model numbers are different. Therefore, if you use the 220/221 cartridges in a printer designed for the 520/521 cartridges, then you will need to swap chips (directions here). It is advised you also purchase a chip resetter so that you retain ink level monitoring with the cartridges.

The 220/221 cartridges have a transparent window that facilitates refilling by providing visual cues on when the cartridge is refilled sufficiently. The 520/521 cartridges are opaque and require you to weigh and calculate the amount of ink to inject in order to refill.

Everything I've said may sound difficult but it is not. Instructions can be found here for whatever method you might choose.
