need some advice whether to retire my 7 year old MP830

it still printing fine with over 60,000 pages printed, but the scanner unit looks to be shot.

keep getting the following errors:
- "scanner is not operating correctly"
- with 22 alternating blinks

sometimes get a screeching sound and looks like the scanner is stuck and can't move.

have tried power OFF/ON, scanner lock OFF/ON, etc. did not help.

still prints fine but scanner issue impacts COPY, SCAN and FAX'ing

i do have a spare MP830 so looking for advice whether to:
1. retire the 60,000 print MP830 and replace with new MP830
2. take a shot at moving the scanner unit from new MP830 to old MP830
3. set up one of my other spares to just do SCAN/COPY/FAX'ing and keep the old MP830 as is to just PRINT, problem is no room to set up another printer where i can easily reach it

need advice on what to do with this old faithful printer ??

I don't know that I'd cannibalise the "new" printer to service the old. Perhaps a half way house of keeping an open eye out for spares/repair MP830's on ebay, ebay and using that instead?

Alternatively I'd go with getting the scanner disconnected and seeing if you can service it yourself with some lubricant or identify what's going on. Could it be something daft like an insect that threw itself between the gear wheels or similar?

Beyond that retire/store the old unit and transfer the printhead/cartridges to your stored one and review the old one as/when you get a chance.

That's just me though... If it were my wife her suggestion would involve sledgehammers

I reckon I’d cannibalise the head and cartridges from your old faithful and get the all new one in place as quick as possible, then wait for a chance to replace the damaged scanner at your earliest convenience.

Just tell her that she can rest a while now..

much thx for the quick and rational thoughts.

i was at first going to tear a brand new printer apart and then try to get it to work with my old faithful printer.

i listened to the sound advice offered. i put the new MP830 in, swapped over the print head and ink carts and was back printing in under 5 min. got a perfect nozzle check after running one cleaning.

will now take my time to see if i can get the scanner unit "unstuck", or maybe find a parts machine and try to swap the scanner into my old faithful printer. it still prints fine, so i could always set it up to be a print-only machine.

lot of time, lot of options, now that i am back in business w a new MP830

FYI, the MP830 was introduced back in 2006, almost 9 years ago, when canon built printers to last.

yup 32 lbs, i had forgotten how much the MP830 weighed

comparable new model(MX922) weighs in at 25 lbs

got to wonder what/where canon had to cut to lose the 7 lbs
