My Canon IP4500 is dead. Wondering about IP4970 (aka IP4920 in U.S)

My Canon IP4500 is dead. It was in standby mode after printing 3 pages. The next thing I know, the power led was gone. I can't turn the power back on, even after trying with different cables & electrical outlets. It was 3.5 years old. I sent it for repair to Canon Center, and they said the logic board was bad. Now, I'm wondering why my Canon printer was always dead every 3 years with logic board problem. My previous i865 & IP3000 gone for the same reason, despite of rare use. Does Canon put a time bomb in it ?

Anyway, Canon Center offered a trade-in for the newest IP4970 (I guess it's IP4920 in US).
I've heard horror stories about the ink consumption on this new printer, about the smaller opaque inktanks.
Question is, does this new printer use the same chromalife ink like IP4500 ?
I have used Inktec bulk ink for CLI-8 (100ml botle) with reasonably good print quality.
Can I expect to use the same Inktec ink on this new printer & receive similar print quality like my dead IP4500 ?
Inktec doesn't seem to have a reference ink no for this new IP4970/IP4920 printer.
Custom profiling the CMYK on the new printer is definitely too complicated for me.

I sorry for your great loss but the fact that you have lost two previous printers
due to the same problem would suggest to me that you have a lousy electrical connection somewhere.

The power to your house must be going up and down like a yoyo or electrician storms could be the direct cause.

The only remedy for curing an unpredictable power supply is to fit an UPS box with power protection built in,
because to lose one to a power problem is unfortunate but to lose three well we wont go there.

The iP 4970 is nowhere near as well built as the iP4500 but you can use your current inks with little or no noticeable differences in colour.
If you have a problem refilling the opaque cartridges then you can get a set of empty 521/221 swap the chips and use them instead..:)
