I think there must be something in the air lately because you are the third or fourth guy
in the past week or so that has the same issues.

Your nozzle check suggests an electrical problem and a new print head may be required to get you back printing again properly.
I would strongly suggest that you do a nozzle check at least weekly to keep your colours in good condition when not in use.

I was just wondering is there a phantom print head destroyer loose or just a new virus eating ink nozzles.:tongue

had a spare print head, put it in and now all is good !

BTW, can still get new print heads from canon, MP830 was $49 shipped +tax, about 50% of what was on amazon/ebay

Congratulations on getting this nice printer back to work. :)

I have a Pixma 5200 which uses same print head and probably same print engine, and the Pixma 5200 is one of the best Canon 5 cartridge printers IMO. Maybe you should get a spare print head from Canon USA while they last? Print heads are much more expensive in Europe, I think the Amazon/Ebay prices reflect that fact.

The service manual states printer and print head life to 19,000 pages or 5 years, whatever comes first, so one cannot complain, but I don't expect a car to break down the day after the warranty expires.

If you need the service manual and parts catalog, I posted them in the service manuals thread, post #67. The links are still working, I just checked them. Be aware that this service manual also has the error regarding service mode operations: http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=49752#p49752
